installed my 406 C.I ,500 H.P., 425 lbs torque small block , installed a new ATI StreetFighter T350 Auto Transmission with the Hurst Quarter Stick Shifter , with the gearing being 1st Gear 2.75 . 2nd Gear 1.52 , and 3rd Gear 1.00 . I also installed a new aluminum drive shaft with a safety loop , subframe connectors , caltrack bars in the rear leafs , QA-1 adjustable coilover shocks in front , QA-1 adjustable shocks in rear but kept my stock multi-leaf springs and attached Cal-track traction bars to them , now I am thinking about changing my gearing in my 12 Bolt Stock Positraction Rear Differential. Now this is were you guys come in , because I am at a standstill here . I am going to use this 1969 Camaro mostly to cruise around like going to car shows , cruise nights and maybe take it to the track maybe once a year . But I will probably only get one run out of it at the track because I believe this car will do at least it the low 11's which will require me to have a cage . And i do not have a cage !! LOL!! Also , I want a driveable car were it does not scream out the R.P.M.'s at 55-60 M.P.H. going down the road or highway , but also I do not want a ""TURD"" were the car has no ""OOF!!"" off the line !! Ok , that being said , My question is ,What gearing do you guys run for good driveability were your car does not scream out the over 2500 R.P.M.'s at 55-60 M.P.H. but still gives you the ""JACK RABBIT !!"" jump when you mash the gas peddle down !! All input would be appreciated here !!! Thanks RD !

Rear gears multiply your engines torque for acceleration and to keep your engine in it's power band if you have enough gears to play with.

How do you drive normally? Are you interested more in straight line acceleration at the track or driveability on the street when cruising. Do You cruise any distance worth mentioning or just to transport your Camaro from home to car shows by driving on the street? All of these questions will indicate your ideal gear ratio.

With a four speed and a four inch stroke BBC I think a 4.56 is ideal, but with a 4L80e tranny and the same BBC, it is going to be happier in front of a 3.55 rear gear.

If you have a 283 or a 302 you need all the ear you can get as the three inch stroke makes for a high reving engine with low bottom end torque. If your idea of a good motor under the hood is a 406SBC wearing 327 decals then that will dictate a smaller numbered rear gear ratio than the Z/28 DZ motor, thanks to lots of bottom end torque and mid range torque (but only if you were conservative in cam choice).

With your combination I would recommend a 3.55 rear gear. I would also recommend a 4L80e transmission and 4.11 rear gears to meet all of your goals. As the tranny is unbreakable in stock trim behind a 406 SBC and the gearing will give you the best of acceleration and cruise.

I have 27 " Mickey Thompson cheater slicks on the rear , and right now have 3.08 gears with a posi . Before I did the complete engine and trans make over , the stock 302 Dz engine ran like a ""TURD "" with those gears . Right now with the new 406 engine it comes off the line just a little better , with good driveability. But I am still looking for more of a Jack Rabbit jump right now which I don't have with those 3.08 gears . But like I said I only go to the track only twice a year , I use this car only on the street at cruise nights and car shows , etc. But still would like a quicker Jack Rabbit start when I mash the gas pedal to the floor from dead stop .

I would run at least 4.10's with what you described. I ran 4.56's in my last car with a 406, th350 w/ 4200 stall. car was a beast. ran 6.90's on motor in the 1/8th and 6.20's with a 200 shot.

I had 2.73's and 28" tall tire along with a hopped up 406ci SBC....went 2.0 60's all day dead hooking and 13.5's or so only using 1st and 2nd.

Went 3.73's and upper 12's getting 1.8's when it hooked....no other changes.

Kept doing mods like cam swaps, head work, and such....NEVER ENDS :noway:

Google Gearing calculator and you can input your gear ratios, rear end, tire size, etc and figure out what your RPM's at a certain speed are.

I have one I've made for my rock crawler and race car, but don't have any of the common Camaro's trans in it yet.

If you want me to update it shoot me a PM with your specs and I'll email you the calculator so you can play around with it all. Or if someone wants to do the "hard" research of getting me gearing of the trans for all the popular transmissions on here I'll all them all to it as well.
