Can anyone help me? My wife bougt me aa 69 Camaro for Christmas that looked really good on the out side. I decided to try and paint it. When I took the Front fenders off the problems began! On the passenger side the cowl is rusted out and so is the area behind that where the bottom rear of the fender bolts to the car. I found the repair piece for the cowl, But what do I do about the fender mount? Also I have quite a bit of rust behind the windshield on the roof line. What is the best way to have this repaired? A whole new roof panel?

Ran into the same type of issues on a chevelle I am restoring. There came a point where I had to decide how far to take it down........the more I dug into it the more I found, and am now in the middle of a frame off when my original plan was to sand/fill/paint (sound familiar anyone :D). I wish I would have just treated the areas, repaired some others with welding and painted it, delaying the full restoration as my camaro is in the frame off stage also.

If you go the short route.... stop the rust, weld in small repairs (a good body shop can make a cowl filler panel out of sheet stock, repair the windshield area and weld a brace to bolt the fender too), and get the body smooth for paint. I am not suggesting you cover anything up, but just delay the major work if you do not want to get in over your head.

If you go the long route, you will find more stuff to repair/replace (you know.....while I have it this far........) and end up with a big project. I love to see any 1st gen done right, but you have to decide what you bought it for.

Good luck

I believe that is supposed to be what it looks like. I can't quite tell if that is where the fender bolts underneath. I can't compare to my car because it is in a garage about 10 miles away. If I knew how to post a picture I could show everyone
Thanks Mark

Yes that is it! Is there a part# or proper name for that piece? That was a good looking replacement job. I am going to use those as a reference for whoever does mine. Thank You!

Thanks for the compliments on that repair! That was the first time I have ever done that too. I got some great help from a member named arai (Chris). Check his build out too for more great tips!

I am still building this car, so feel free to ask away. I will help in any way I can.

Those parts are called the lower hinge pillar repair panels. It was not that hard to install. Of course you will need a welder to do it though. I butt-joint welded it in place by simply cutting the old one away at the same length of the new repair panel. They are about $75 each side to buy through a Goodmark or Dynacorn dealer.

Do you need both sides or just one? I have the passengerside that I didn't install that I want to sell.

here are a few pictures of my installation so you have another reference thread as well http://www.camaros.net/forums/showthread.php?t=126949&page=9 Go down to post #128

Hey Chris! How ironic that we both read and posted to this thread at the same time!

It's a little later here in FL though.... tired.... gotta go soon...

HAHA...I was thinking the same thing.

Mark,

If you decide you want to do some welding and try the installation yourself, there are several members here to hep guide you through the process. Just as Todd said, this was my 1st time as well to do something of this nature. We are all here to help you in any way we can....just let us know. There are several extensive builds going on all at the same time right now....so there are several pictures/threads you can use as a reference.

that is some really crappy advice.

Mark, I don't suppose you can weld can you? Got any pictures of the damage you're referencing?
What is crappy about it? Those are the choices. No other way to get it fixed. Anyway...the point I was going to make is...nobody makes those pieces, so you will have to rebuild them from scratch either yourself or pay someone else to do it if you don't have the skills or tools. Mine was rotted in the same places and I just finished rebuilding all of that. Sorry it was so blunt, but thats all I got typed before this wonderful creation called Vista locked up.

Mark,

I came across the same problem only 90% of my car was rusted (hence the nickname). I never welded either BUT I did go out buy one and practiced, practiced, and practiced. I am still not spreading a roll of quarters when I weld. Thats why a grinder or 3M roloc discs become your very good friend. Do not get overwhelmed. You have a 69 camaro and best of all your wife bought it! Dude, does your wife teach any classes on buying cars or parts? If she does let me know so I can enroll mine. Pretty much all the parts are available and the help you receive on TC is amazing! Good Luck!
