I'm trying to make a decision on how I want to approach my front speakers. I am putting 6 x 9s in the back which is the easy part. I've seen pictures of what looks like 5 1/4 in the kick panels which makes me just a bit nervous having enough space for the ebrake pedal. so what's worked? I also interested to know if anyone has every attempted to put speakers in the doors themselves.

Check out the kick panels that Screamin Performance carries, they have a place for a tweeter and they clear the e-brake assembly. I have a set for mine, they are nice quality, hopefully get to here how they sound in a month or so.

I did not buy the ones I saw at the repop houses. I bought like 4.5" dia or something, two way, and made my own housing. out of the original speaker. (cut out the middle, and attached a mounting board) Then, used the original rubber seal, which I covered with speaker material. The speakers were heavy, so I made a bracket to hook on the front of the dash (later covered by the dash housing or dash pad, can't remember which) and fastened to the original mounting stud.

Once installed, if you look through the windshield at the speaker, it looks stock.

If you take the kick panels off you will find there are ready made holes/compartments for speakers...
Like above I have my fronts in there, and 6x9 s in factory 1992 toyota corollla boxes up on the rear shelf...they are a shape that matches the overall theeme of the car and painted to match my interior factory trim.

this camaro has them placed in the door, looks amazing but probably a very expensive job just to the the speaker area made because I doubt the make a panel like that ready made.
I am liking the screaming performance one especially since you don't have to move anything from what I can tell.
I was assuming the ready made hole for purposed for the heat/air system so i was afraid use that. my stock style kick panel is still in boxes and i haven't installed the vintage air yet.....kinda learning as I go, don't know where I would be without this forum.

With them in the doors, one tends to..well paseenges do...brush the door in that area with the foot getting in and out...which is maybe why GM put those resesses in behind the kick panels rather than the door

Looks like the door release handles are fun to get to. Minimal clearance there... Those build outs are nice, but a little too long.

I used the 4x6 Infinty plate speakers in the factory kick panel location (instructions from the vert section). Works very well (those are the only speakers I have currently). They sound good and I can still hear them with the top down. But they will not hold when I really crank up the volume (start to distort) :( Next plan is to get the 6x9, 4 ch amp and a subwoofer installed this season.

I would not put speakers in the doors because of the holes you have to cut in the metal, door panel and wire routing. I feel that it kinda destroys parts, I had to search a lot for uncut original parts and there were a lot of cut-up ones. The next owner may want to but it back to original (ya never know!) and would appreciate uncut parts.

Considering the same thing, what to do about the front speakers. I think I'm just going to ditch the center speaker. And I just ordered a set of Screaming performance's Kickpanels + closeout cans:

Thread on PT about them:

Looks like they can be adapted to 5-1/4" speakers too.

Also some custom close out cans for 4x6 speakers that I also looked at:

Hope this helps!

I put two 4" pioneer 4 way speakers in the stock location under the dash. I have two pioneer 4 way 6x9's in the rear and I had to fade the stereo for more rear sound. The overall sound is great and best of all I didn't have to cut anything(for the fronts).

good luck
