This is for all the restorers out there who can spot the real deal...help please:beers:

I purchased a 1968 327 air cleaner off ebay.
The air cleaner has a snorkle on the drivers side..
The thermactor is on the snorkle (for my automatic car).
it is about 15" in diam..give or take 1/2"...
and has a raised lid...to me the lid looks like (exactly like) the SS model but it is not chromed.
So the question is...did they just chrome the standard air cleaner lid and call it good on the SS 350? Or is it actually a different lid somehow?
If it is the same lid as the 327, I should be able to just chrome it and I will have my 350 SS set up right?

Thanks for the help!! I am getting near the end of the build and feeling better every day. ;)

Garth,
Sounds like you have the same thoughts I do.
Thanks for the input. :beers: I hope a couple others weigh in but I am feeling pretty good about the lid being the same except chromed....especially after looking at a few other pictures of the lid on a couple other sites.

Russ,
Thanks for the link. That confirms the dimensions now I just need to know if the lid is any different other than it being chromed on the L48.
Thanks again

Ok, one more question

Through looking at MANY pictures it appears that the 68 SS350 air cleaner and the 327 275 hp are the same.

EXCEPT i have seen NO AIR cars with the snout facing toward the passenger side.

Would an SS without air use an air cleaner base that faces the other direction?

And be the same whether automatic or stick?

Other than the chrome lid, is there ANY physical difference in the bases?

I know the auto trans cars got the warmup valve and the stick cars did not ...

I think the 1969 air cleaners faced one direction (Passenger side) and the 1968's faced the drivers side. I have found a 327 air cleaner, chromed the air cleaner lid and it looks fantastic and very original. I don' t think anyone would ever know. Check the pictures. :hurray:
