Thanks for the help in advance! So a buddy of mine offered to sell me his 68 camaro - it is an SS clone that needs some work, but it seems like a good starter car. It has a newly freshened up 355 that seems like a good cruiser and runs great, a new turbo 350 trans, and the 10 bolt rear was just gone through and swapped out gears to 3.73's. All of the electrical works and all of the gauges work except the tic toc tach clock. It does have some rust under the vinyl top, as seen in the pictures, and also has a couple other rust bubbles, but mostly seems like a pretty solid car. I know the vinyl tops can hide a lot of issues underneath, but everything else on the car seems to be in pretty good shape. The owner also put new leaf springs in the rear, new tie rods, and converted the brakes in the front to disc. The hood is a steel hood and seems to fit well, just needs to be painted along with the trunk lid. It also comes with the original 327 block and still has the original protect-o-plate. Any help I can get would be appreciated!

So when you are looking at the value of a car, you have to take several things into consideration.
1. What condition is the car currently in? In this case looks really good!
2. What has been done to the car? (Fresh motor, gone through)
3. What still needs to be done? (Minor rust repair, paint hood and trunk)
4. What is the max value of the car? ($25Kish)

So I would use what still needs to be done and use that to negotiate. I personally wouldn't pay over $20K for the car, and if it is a good friend, I would hope he would cut you a deal, and sell it to in the $16-18K range. But it is a very nice looking car, that looks well taken care of. I hope it's sitting in your garage soon!

Looks like a 4” or 6” cowl hood. Why the big hood?

I’m gueesing the game plan would be repair the rust as needed and paint?

I would estimate a fair price in the high teens low twenty

The rust under the vinyl top is a killer unless you can fix it yourself. Even then you need to deduct for it. Of course more rust may be hiding elsewhere. Is the car in a rust prone area of the country ? Do you know the history of the car ? Pics of underside, engine, interior, inside trunk, etc. would help. Having the POP is nice but due to being a clone adds no value to me. What makes it a clone now other than badges ? I also don't care for the hood. If the hood and trunk were painted and the car listed on the open market like Craigslist, Ebay, etc. it would probably bring ~$23k. If no more rust is known/found you would do ok ~$18k. Deduct from there for any other work/repairs needed. JMHO.

The rust was a little concerning to me under the vinyl top, but I plan on buying it and fixing it down the road, but just cruising with it for now. I had a body guy look it over and he said it seemed in really good shape for mostly original metal. The price seems more than fair - he told me he was going to post it at 18k but would sell to me for 14k. The hood isn't as big as the pictures make it look - I didn't do a good job of taking a lot of pictures and the angle makes it look huge along with being in primer.

The car was sold in New Mexico, and my friend bought it from one of his friends in Orlando. It is now in Indiana, but it sits in a heated garage and rarely comes out of it.

It sounds like I would be doing more than alright at 14k.

$14 is a steal IMHO

I would not waste the money to paint the hood that's on it now

A new 2" or more clone correct SS hood is only a couple hundred bucks.

Nice thing is you can drive it the way it is and do things as you go

Agree! $14K is a steal. If you drive it for a while and decide you don't want it (probably not going to happen!) or get in a pinch, you would definitely be able to make your money back or see a profit. That's a good investment! ...and honestly, I wouldn't be in a hurry to paint it. I like the black hood, black trunk, black roof on a white car look. It works and it stands out and not in a bad way! Go get it!

It is a 2 inch cowl... I thought I was losing my mind after seeing that comment and then looking at the picture, but I just went over and looked at it and it is a 2 inch cowl! The primer and angle just makes it look huge in a couple pics!
I am going to pick the car up this weekend, thanks for all the help!
