C5 conversion??

Hi there.

I just found this in my area :
≥ Schijven en remtangen Corvette C5 — Remmen en Aandrijving — Marktplaats

Which are from a C5 'vette.

I have original stock spindle on my car and I have this similar kit (mine is from TRSD) :

Front "Classic" Big Brake System 1964-1972 A-Body 4301551 - Baer Brakes
right stuff detailing big brake kit (pro-touring.com)

I read on internet about C4 - C5 conversion, and I read guys are self fabricating brackets. So I could do that. Kore3 do that but it is too expensive for me... (Europe)

I don't know about the stock C5 rotors.

Do you believe it is worth to get the C5 rotors or they will not fit on my hubs??

Thanks,

Marc

The Kore 3 brackets are the best for a factory style spindle. In the past I have turned down the outer diameter of a drum hub (instead of the one Tobin sells). Might be another option. What wheels are you running, that would be another consideration, go to Tobins website and down load the fitment guide to see if they will fit. The C5/C6 vette setup will not fit many stock or American racing style wheel setups because of the caliper sticks out farther from the rotor that’s other brake setups.

Thanks.
I am strongly considering this set up.
I am disappointed by my big brakes from right stuff detailing, don't know which part they use to built the calipers but to me it is part of the poor braking performance. Furthermore I have a constant noise from day first with the brakes when you don't brake.
I've been reading on pro-touring.com Pete writeup on his conversion years ago (think dated 2009) and been reading about wheel fitment also.
I have Vintage Wheel Works V45.
I think the community is still present to assist me with this conversion.
I think the brackets and other parts I will need from Kore3.
I also think but am not yet decided to find and use a used corvette C5 MC + Dual Diaphragm Booster so all is complete as original GM Corvette C5 parts.

Don't know if Tobin from Kore3 is still present but he is very knowledgable from what I am reading.
Any comments appreciated.

Yes I think too...
Solutions are available.
I saw that on Ebay Germany you find C5 calipers per piece, because I'll need another rear left one... also good.
I'll check about machining options of my parts and get forwards with what I need to do/buy.

Now that I have this opportunity to buy the used rotors and calipers real cheap that's the next winter project :)

I am however surprised about TRSD.

Really my brakes sucks, a panic stop is not going to slow down the car as should, I cannot make the wheels to block on a dry road.
Or... this / my TRSD set up is just sufficient for many of us and I am asking my old car to brake like a modern car... ?
This kit is still meant to be a copy of a Mustang '94-'04 Cobra and I cannot imagine that this car would brake so poorly.

Or, the components used to build this kit are not quality equal to the OEM Ford parts. I also understands all parts are important so maybe type/quality of different parts are questionable like MC, caliper pistons,..

Any return of experience?

Yes that's what they are and that's what my kit is also. It is a copy. And these C4 calipers were used on Mustang 4.6l Cobra '94 to '04.

I called Tobin and explained my set up and issues I have.

He told me to try other pads. Then change to smaller bore MC and dual diaphragm 9" booster and get the good vacuum needed for the booster.
That should greatly improve my set up.

Please tell me more about the performance of old baer classic front kit.
I want to be able to lock the wheels;
If I can do that with these improvement than I am fine.

I just bough a good set of pads.

I am using this 9” dual master with my 1” MC and C6 Z51setup. Works great and gives you more clearance. I would follow Tobins advice and not worry about trying to change your entire brake system. Do you have enough vacuum coming from your engine? The C4 stuff works pretty good in a street driver.

This is exactly what I am thinking now.

Tobin suggested to use this dual diaphragm from Tuff Stuff, change my MC to 7/8" and use some DSE brackets to fit the booster. I don't know if I need the DSE brackets or if I can make my own easily.

I will go step by step. I bought EBC yellow stuff pads front and rear.
I'll try that and see.
I'll also go tune the engine correctly (together with install of a ignition box for propane) and see what vacuum I'll get.

I miss the type of 7/8" MC that fits with my current hard line threads. I guess I'll keep my RSD proportional valve (it is not a valve that you can adjust basically).
Any ideas / propositions on the MC are welcome.

Thanks,

Marc

I've been very happy with my C5 front brakes with 13" EBC rotors and EBC pads (NOT MADE IN CHINA). I got custom brake lines from Tobin made to my specs. All is connected to my OEM 11" booster, but I did downsize my OEM disc brake MC per Tobin's suggestion. I'd have to check my records, but I think I went from the OEM 1.125" MC to the 1". You can get parts from Tobin or other sources like Summit, etc.
