Just curious. You see these figures thrown around all the time. How many people have ever driven a car with that much power and if so, was it mostly a track car?

I've found that most people that talk about RWHP numbers rather than ET's, have a dyno queen that doesn't perform.

Those numbers are fairly common for a heads and mild cam upgraded LS engine. You change stuff, you get it dyno tuned. You get it dyno tuned, you have the numbers. You have the numbers, you're going to tell people. If I had an impressive...ummm... I'd let everyone know even if I never used it.

Lots of cars come with those numbers from the factory now.

Ever driven a not-too-uncommon bi-turbo V12 Mercedes SL? New Corvettes, Camaros, Mustangs, etc.; take your pick.

Not rear wheel horsepower.

When did it become the chic thing to claim you have or want to build a car with what in the 70's was Pro Stock power for the street? Do these guys even understand their getting into the realm of needing a full chassis and cage? With proper shocks, tires, and traction, you'll be well into the 11's and possibly the 10's. That kind of power will make the local drag strip ban you from the track until you put a roll cage in.
I think its a joke. Most of these people will never run their cars down the strip and as alluded to earlier in the thread, its just something for posers to brag about at the local Sonic.
As chassis dyno's became easier to find it became a RWHP race. I've seen it on a bunch of forums. People build the car to make RWHP numbers rather than ET's. Many of these cars only end up running mid 11's at best when they should run mid to low 10's.

Right about this time last year I sold my heads/cam/exhaust 02 Z06. The car made 453 rwhp and its best time on the track was a 12.37 @ 118.37 . It also got 28.6 miles per gallon on the highway.

The car was dependable, had good street manners and I used it for daily driving during the spring/summer/fall. There were a few situations where you had to be careful with the throttle ( clover-leaf on and off ramps with metal expansion joints ) but overall the car was pretty easy to drive. Traction control and active handling kept me out of trouble in the rain.

While I'm certain many folks just use the numbers to brag, you guys need to broaden your horizons. In pro-touring circles, ET's and local drag strip bans mean nothing. Some hobbyists build cars to be driven more than a few seconds at a time. Come out of a 60 MPH turn on a road course with a 3/4 mile straight in front of you and see if you can't put that 450 RWHP to good use.

I agree with you. There are other uses for that much power besides drag racing. However, most of the ones I've encountered don't compete in any type of racing. :beers:

Yes. I call it "let's count cars". When I take people for a ride, on the highway, pull the cutouts, hit it at 50, fishtail for a sec, grab the road and make them count the flying by cars for the next 5-6 seconds. It's a ride and gives most the shakes every time (OK - me too sometimes...). :D

I have a 496 with a d1sc procharger. The engine is 8-1 compression so it is real easy to drive and not obnoxious at all. I have a 6 speed with 3.90 gears. I can run around all day low rpms and no overheating. Sixth gear is .5 ratio so 70 mph under 2k rpm I must admit first gear does not hook for beans but I like to roll into the gas in 2cnd and then third. I gets from 30 to 100 in a hurry and is not scary and does not feel out of control. I do not street race and do not go to the track with it. Where I live there are tons of farm roads with no trees and no people so I am not afraid of hitting anything or one. I never had it dynotuned but I would guess rwhp well over 600. I like the adrenalin but if it aint your cup of tea then that is fine with me.

Just for giggles go on ebay and check out how many cars have over 1000 rwhp. Just do a search on twin turbo vettes or vipers and gt40's. Now that is insane fast. Would not be fun going sideways at over 100 mph for me anyway.

Ahhhh, a guesstimate. Means nothing. Got a time slip? Probably not.
Point wasn't if power was my cup of tea. Point is I'm tired of all these posers who have no idea what it feels like to drive a car with that kind of horsepower. I have driven a new Z28 and rode in one on the GM test track in Milford thru work. Most of the people who say they want that much power or have that much power would piss their pants if they actually experienced it. That car is "only" 500 HP at the crank NOT 500 at the rear wheels. The real hilarious thing about it is most have been brought up and learned to drive in the era of the insanely powerful 200 hp V-6 in a front wheel drive car. It's a joke and a half.
So in other words, this thread was nothing but a waste so that you can whine about other people that don't affect you one little bit. Got it.:boring:

It all depends on the combination & the type of chassis installed in.

450-500rwhp is not a big deal anymore. That is basically 11 sec car with decent traction & a good 60' time. A true 500rwhp can go 10's in a well sorted drag race setup. The above Vette is representative of stock suspension, & a street tire launch. It is very respectable & most people with performance car experience can drive one. The average retard that thinks his 14sec Civic is fast, will likely get killed in one though.

I have a 95 Z28 w/ Procharged 383. It went 9.90's @ 136mph with 654rwhp through an automatic. Very drivable on the street due to good suspension & drag radials. This was a full weight, 3.42 geared street car, not a race only setup. Forced induction & fuel injection makes for a very street friendly ride if done properly. On 275 street tires, it could be a handful, but I drove it 60mi/day to work getting approx. 14mpg.

Yes, most people talk rwhp numbers & have no idea what it compares to at the track.
No matter what, you can always compare the mph to the rwhp & see who is full of B.S.

A friend has a 3900lb 05 GTO w/ 1036rwhp & he can drive it just about anywhere. It went 8.97@152.

Obviously junk tires & poor suspension results in a lot of tire smoke & potentially some neighbors mail boxes getting run over.
Most people do just brag or lie about numbers & show everyone the black marks it can put down with no track results.

For reference the typical car loses about 15% for a manual & 20% for an auto. Loose torque converters (depending on the stall) will consume even more power.
