Yes there are many threads here in the archives here on convertible speaker options. Boxes under the seats, boxes in the rear well, in the kicks are all options used.

I have replaced the factory dash speaker with an aftermarket piece that has 2 small speakers and the kick panels in my '69 ragtop are made for small factory speakers. When I get ready to replace what is in the kick panel now I'm going to head over to a motorcycle shop. Some of the big cubic inch cruisers running around here have very loud clear sounding audio systems and I'm sure I'll find some 4x6 replacements...

Brent - How'd you fit the magnet in the door area for the 6.5"? I was fighting to keep the magnet from sticking to the body when placing my 4x6 in the hole, as there just wasn't that much room to navigate. And I don't have to tell you that even when hooked up to an amp and external sub, the 4x6's leave a lot to be desired.

There are closeout cans are included with the kick panels. They give you about 3" of depth for the magnet. Lots of good info here: http://www.pro-touring.com/threads/57007-Custom-kick-panels-for-1st-gen-Camaros

This isn't my car, but shows the closeout can:

Not a lot of choices. I used the factory spaces in the front kick panels and the dash area. I mounted 6 x 9's behind the back seat with the covers screwed through the well material, facing the rear of the car. Amp in the trunk. With the top down not so good, top up great and no hint of cutting things up like some of the examples. Verts aren't known for there great sounds with the top down. . .my 99 is not wonderful either.

That's why I'll be looking into motorcycle speakers. I can't tell you how many times these big touring bikes have pulled up next to me at a light and I have the windows up, AC on and my own radio on in the truck and I can't hear anything but the bikers music, it's loud but it's also crystal clear. It's annoying but it also gives me hope that I can find some 4x6 speakers for my factory kick panels that can be heard with the top down doing 65mph...

Have a look at J&M speakers unfortunatley what we do not see are the 7.25 inch speakers hidden in the fairings (2 of them) powered by an amps and 4x6 used as fillers. In the back if they have a box it may just have a 8 or 10 inch sub. Size does matter when sound is open to the elements which is why 7.25 speakers are utilized .

The little 4x6 are just not capable of clearly reproducing sound and are restricted to the amount of air they can actually push.

I was impressed to see what gave bikes that sound you talked about but as always its big powerfull speakers that you would not think could fit.

Have a look at you tube and you will see the comparison between speaker size , power requirements to get them heard. No different than getting good sound in a convertible. :) Just more power and large speakers is all that is needed.

I'm no car audio guy, but the 5 little Bose cubes that I have for my surround sound at home sure seem capable of pushing out good sound considering their size. I've also got a 30+ year old pair of Bose 901's and while they sound better than the cubes it is absolutely amazing how these new tech mini speakers perform, so you would think that there must be a car audio equivalent out there.

And FWIW, I tried another company's kick panels first, and didn't like how far they encroached on my foot space.
Those things don't leave any room for a man-peddle or high beam switch do they?!?!

What a bad design!

Yeah most of the decent ones require you give up the vent which I like using. So my next setup will be the current dual mount true stereo in the standard center dash and speaker boxes mounted in the trunk facing front shooting through the rear seat back. I saw an 69 ss396 vert last year that sounded way too nice to have been a winter kitchen table project. Didn't cost a fortune and made zero mods to the car.

i put speaker boxes on the floor behind the front seats facing up(nobody is ever in my back seat anyways), and then i used the original kick panels, cut the back off, and mounted speakers in the vent hole. The covers hide the speakers and it looks stock and the vents on the panels lets out the sound.
