To begin, this is my first thread. The first of many, I'm sure.
I am currently restoring a 68' Z but have run into a small issue regarding the V belt diagram. Originally the car had 2 belts. One from P/S to crank and another from ALT to water pump to crank. No A/C, no smog. I recently spoke with an individual who told me there should have been 3... A single belt going between the crank and water pump as well. I have no literature to double check his theory. I have searched the forums but with no success. I simple picture of the proper belt routing would be great. Thank you all in advance for your help.

How is that 3rd belt possible? There would be no way to adjust it. How would you install it? Remove a pulley?

Thanks Buenymayor.
That tells me:
Crank pulley w/extension - 3 groove
Water pump pulley - 2 groove
The guess pulley alignment will dictate belt routing?
Any other info, links or pics on this subject would be greatly appreciated.
The setup that came on the car was not correct, leaving me in the dark.

I found this doing an image search. Although on a corvette (?) it seems to have a single belt from crank to water pump unless it is driving something else not seen in the pic..
I wouldn't know how to adjust or mount it either, I'm just trying to find the proper belt routing for a 68' Z28 w/ps. Tougher than I imagined it would be.

It's all in the z/28 fact book.

1968's with smog pump and PS option have 3 belts.
All engines get one belt from crank to water pump and alternator. Tension adjusted at the alternator.
Smog pump belt goes on crank double pulley, water pump and smog pump. Tension adjusted at the smog pump
Power steering pump option gets 3rd pulley added to crank and runs to PS pump. Tension adjusted at the PS pump.
Book says all 1968 Z/28's had a smog pump.
Sounds like someone removed your smog pump and 3rd pulley on the crank, then used the smog pump pulleys for the PS.
How is the alignment for the PS belt?

Sounds like you should have 2 belts with PS and no smog, and an unused pulley on the crank and water pump.

Thanks 68 Ragtop.
Specifically, which Z28 fact book are you referencing?
P/S alignment was awful and I couldn't figure it out. Upon disassemble I found many "engineering solutions" made by previous owners. It shouldn't have been on the road!

The book referenced is "The Definitive 1967-1968 Camaro Z-28 Fact Book" by Jerry MacNeish. Do a search for it. It will be very helpful, if you can find one.

That belt probably goes to an ac compressor or smog pump. My 67 327 has ac and ps, and has the 3 belt setup (or had it, I removed the compressor) Its probably the same as your 302 setup except your 3rd belt powers the smog pump instead of an ac compressor. If your engine truly has no smog pump then I would say you only need 2 belts. Ive got 3 grooves on the crank and 2 on the water pump. Probably what youve got.

That's probably exactly what it is.. Thanks!

You should be able to look in the '68 AIM as well. (Assembly Instruction Manual) If you don't have one, do a search and they will tell you how to get an electronic (.pdf) version for free.
