Does anyone know the reason for the square opening behind the rear license plate of a 67 (possibly other model years?) Camaro?

Makes for a nice small view of the lower gas tank when the plate is removed....

I always thought it was for access to the tank filler neck hose clamp.

Well, I'm glad then that the 67 did not put the fuel filler there; being a bit older these days, my lower back would hurt a bit filling the tank, or my knees would be dirty getting to the gas opening!

The hole is an access hole for the filler tube clamps.
As others have stated, look at the tank from underneath.
How would one tighten the clamps of tubing to filler neck and tank?
I agree with assembly line access.

I would think a better way of doing that would be to have the welded tube on the tank go into the trunk and have the connection there. Seems easier than having that hole back there. Maybe it was a safety issue that the tube had to be separate outside the trunk in case of an accident. Idk.

I've had the tank out a couple of times, putting the tank up with a foot long rigid filler tube attached trying to fit it through the trunk and dealing with the tank straps would be a nightmare.

Exactly my opinion. Only someone that has not worked on one would take exception to that design.
