1969 Rear Spoiler Installation location?

Hey guys,

I'm trying to add a rear spoiler to my 69 Camaro that did not originally have one. I noticed on the rear trunk lid that the holes are drilled for the Camaro emblem in the lower right corner. It seems that the spoiler will cover these if I put it where I believe it's supposed to go (near the bottom edge).

Two questions:

1. What is the exact location for drilling the holes for the spoiler. Does anyone have a template or measurements?

2. I'm assuming I need to relocate (redrill) the holes for the Camaro emblem. WHere does this go in relation to the spoiler?

Thanks in advance!

Scalise,

My car is a D80 car, so mine came out of the factory with the front and rear spoiler, but you can tell the corresponding holes when you look underneath the trunk. If you held the rear spoiler over the rear of the trunk where it would be located, it should make sense as to its location. You should see a "nippled" area underneath, towards the rear of the trunk. As far as the Camaro emblem on the rear of the trunk... my D80 car doesn't have that emblem.

It's up to you, but I would NOT use a template. You might get lucky and it would fit, but there have several guys on this forum who found the template hold did not align with their studs.

I made a template out of light posterboard and pushed the studs onto it enough to mark it. Then I punched holes and slipped it over the studs, and cut it to fit the underside of the spoiler. Then I removed the studs and marked EXACTLY where I wanted the spoiler to be, with masking tape. (The little gussets on the underside of the spoiler should be 1/16" forward of the deck lid lip) Then I aligned the template to the tape, and taped the template down. Then centerpunched the holes, and drilled 7/32". Then, with a friend, I aligned the spoiler (with the studs installed) to the deck lid. Checked out all holes and marked how each should be enlarged. If the stud was centered in the hole, I simply drilled out to 1/4". If the stud was off a little, I used a small jeweler's file to enlarge to the appropriate side of the hole.

As for the emblem holes, they should be centered on the two oval holes in the underside of the deck lid. On the underside, I measured up from an emblem hole to the "eyeballed" location. Then transferred that dimension to top side, and marked it. Then I used a cardboard template to locate the other 3 holes, and drilled.

Note that if you drill before painting, you should go back with a jeweler's file to carefully remove any paint in the holes. Otherwise, you run the risk of popping a chip in the paint if you try to force the emblem on.

A template is safe to use. But you have to verify the studs on your emblem line up with the markings of where to drill on the template. If not, make the adjustment with a pencil.

I just used installed the truck lid emblem on my 69 and the location of the studs on original GM emblem are different than the repro GM licensed emblem. Not by much but enough so it wouldn't fit in the original GM holes on my header panel. I wanted to put the new emblem on the header and the original on the trunk, but it wasn't happening.

The template will give you the proper location on the trunk though. Something to keep in mind. There are two slots on the underside of the trunk lid where you catch the emblem studs. Make sure your emblem lines up with those slots otherwise you're going to have a lot of fun catching those nuts.

Every spoiler is a little bit different b/c of production tolerances. Make a cardboard template by sticking the studs on your own spoiler thru a large piece thin of cardboard. This is the only way I have ever found that gives good results. Trace and cut around the spoiler making note of the locating tabs etc... This makes the most accurate template for "your" car and spoiler.

If you've just gotta have a drawing, the easiest way to get the measurements is to go to Rick's First Gen and download this .PDF:

http://www.firstgen.com/catalog/Ricks-182-201.pdf

It's a big document, if your on dial up it'll take about a week! Page 197 has the spoiler hole locations dimensioned, print this catalog page AND USE IT AS A GUIDE ONLY!!! If you just go and drill the holes at these locations, you will be disappointed, and you'll likely be buying a new decklid!!

Good Luck,

Paul D.

To all, I'd like to official call myself a ig-nor-a-mus for stating that my car didn't have a emblem on my deck lid.... and in the future, I will try to only speak when the words that come out of my mouth are of an intelligent nature. :)
