i have a 2000 silverado 2500hd, 6.0 liter with hd trans, not an allison however. i just bought it last week, it has 32000 miles on it. when i test drove it i heard a small gear mesh sound in the tranny in first gear, the gm of the dealer is a good friend of mine and said it was normal and it was the planetary gears, he serviced the trans and let me watch when they pulled the pan, no metal, no debrist, fluid clean. tranny shifts fine and stiff through the gears. does anyone here have a similar truck and does yours do this? just want to make sure im in the clear. also when the truck sits for a while it has a engine sound at start up. it sounds like the lifters pumping up, like its pulling oil through the galleys and after about 30 secs the sounds almost completely goes away any input? thanks chris

Hi Chris, I have a 99 with same setup. I've got the tow package with trans cooler & temp gage in mine.
Mine does have a small whine to it also. Normal as far as the GM mechanics at the dealership say.
Also, the noise at startup, from what I understand by guy's here on the site & the GM mechanics, is piston slap. Goes away after warmup & is normal for the 6.0.

I have always thought the noise at startup was from the roller cam, that is now found in most newer trucks. Anyway, don't worry about it, they all do it. It also can be contributed to the 5w-30 oil.

The colder months you would want the thinner oil, so it will flow easier. Use 5W-30 in cold weather. Use 10W-30 (Thicker) in the warmer weather.

That's what I do with my 2000 1500. 5W-30 is what's recommended "by the book" anyway.

The 4.8l engine definitely knocks\slaps more in colder weather.... almost none in the warm months. Drives me NUTS! I thought the bottom end was falling out of it this morning.
My '98 Blazer did the same thing at the same times of the year.

The noise is normal for the 4l80 in the 2500 non diesel or 8100 trucks. It is nothing to worry about, it is the same as an M22 trans...remember how it sounds in 1-3 same thing, the gears are cut straighter for strength. As far as 5w-30 or 10w-30, there is no real difference in the two and you will most likely not see ANY difference in hte two. The noise you hear is piston slap and is due to the piston skirt being shorter than on older model pistons....there is NO repair for this nad causes no issues to reliability of the engine. Hope this helps.

i used to get these complaints all the time at the dealership i work at, normal condition on both counts, tumper is right, short, low friction piston skirts. mine sounds like a diesel when i fire it up on a cold morning. 106000 miles and counting. david
