350 short block?

Dears,

Some of you followed my other topics where I was talking about PCV valves... and timing chains... Well it turns out my engine certainly has worn piston ring seals, also cylinders look glassy,...
The cost for bore/honing + new internals + all the work far exceed the cost for a new short block.
The good parts I have :
  • LS T56 trans
  • I am in the process of porting a good set of Vortec heads and have new LS type beheeve spring + retainers for 0.480 lift
  • new in the box XE262 flat tappet hydraulic comp cam + 16 hydraulic lifters
  • performer intake vortec style
  • a good moroso oil pan for old style sbc
  • all new vortec gaskets for intake

One of my options is to buy a short block 350 ci.
Can you share with my your experiences? What would you do?
Would you consider a 1 piece rear main seal?

Also what are the good places to buy a short block from? I live in Belgium/Europe and have a forwarding company in IL, Benseville I can use for shipment by container.

Thanks for your input,

Marc

no, ATK has an expensive core charge.

the remaining available BPE engines are getting sold very quickly... It seems BPE is really the best for the money.
I will miss the extra features and light weight of aluminum heads but ok that's the way it is...

I ordered this one, the last one:
BP3503CT1 , same 355 ci , but 2 bolt main, with vortec heads, not ported.
I think I will pocket port these new heads on exhaust port and install 0.015" head gaskets.

I wonder about the serpentine if it would fit under our camaro std hoods?
SBC FRONT ACCESSORY DRIVE | DUAL-BELT QUICK SERPENTINE W/ ALT | PS | W – BluePrint Engines
The air conditioning pump is fairly high... my engine is out of the car and the hood as well so I cannot measure really.

I need your help with this serpentine before finilizing my order :)

Serp drive pictures won't work. AC is too high.

Look at these.

And I would bother pocket porting the heads

Thanks for your information. Yes porting these heads, I will get more power for sure :) maybe it will be similar set up as with the aluminum heads at the end of the day...

For the serpentine : I have a water pump pulley with fan blades and original radiator : does this kit allow to run the fan blades?

You would not use your WP pully as that serpentine kit includes the multi rib one. It does appear by the pic the WP pully takes a 4 bolt fan. You could call or email BP and ask if a "stock" type blade bolts up to it but the pic suggests it does. You "may" need a spacer between that BP pully and your fan. It may be fine without. Just place your fan on it (or fan & clutch fan if you use that) and confirm that 1/2 of your fan depth is in the shroud and 1/2 is out. Those are available at places like NPD, Ricks Camaro, Camaro Central, etc and come in various thickness (1/2", 1?, etc) if you need one.
if I take it polished, does it require frequent maintenance and polishing to keep beautifull?
Well I am not a underhood chrome guy but if you prefer chrome...it always takes more cleaning care than "black" to look "new". Your choice

Good catch Rif

It also looks (with the larger pic) that the face of the WP pully is not flat so if so it would not accept a stock type fan blade

Generally these serpentine systems are used with electric fans mounted on radiator vs mechanical fan type mounted to WP pully and that may be the case with this BP one.

OP, contact BP for specifics

I have a similar (CVF Racing) serpentine belt system and I am running a fan with clutch, but both the clutch and fan have to be reverse rotation. I am very happy with it. I highly recommend it. But that first one you posted will not work It is the first one I bought and there is no way the A/C fits with the hood closed. Do not get that one.

I stand corrected I was looking at the first serp system the OP posted with the high AC moun. that one is a standard rotation if the OP does not have AC he can use that system with his current fan set up.

Dears ,
Dear Brettalen,

My parts are sitll at the Ilinois forwarder place and some waiting for shipment from supplier stores.
Meanwhile I am working on the electricity and selling my old parts.

When I installed my new Global west solid body mounts, the front radiator support bolts were too short. I need 1/2" diam 3" long bolts but the kit comes with 2.75 long bolts. Here in belgium you can get bolts in inches only by complete boxes of 50 or 100 units, or you pay like 45 $ for 2 bolts like the one I need for my body mounts, art special fixation stores... Yes I know this is crazy o_O but the true reality of our world where service is scarce.
Today I think about which bolts I will need that I don't have, and I am quite sure I'll miss bolts for the installation of the new Hayden clutch and fan blades with the CVF wraptor kit.

So I'm asking your help :
  • is there a hardware store (in Ilinois or close) that I could contact to get me the bolts I need?
  • Brett, based on the parts you installed that are the same as mine, can you point out which bolts are needed to install clutch and fan on the wraptor kit WP ? I will chose different lenghts for the fan installed as we don't know which/ if a spacer is required. I bought this spacer in case I need it : Derale Cooling Products 31500 Derale Flex Fan Standard Spacers | Summit Racing

Thank you for your help.

The Hayden 2734 is a thermal clutch Fan.... the Flex-A-Lite 5255 is not a thermal clutch fan.
I recommend the Hayden thermal clutch fan.

A thermal clutch fan engages when it senses higher air temps coming thru the radiator (idling, stop & go/low speed driving), but will disengage the clutch fan when more cooler air is moving thru the radiator while driving at higher speeds (highway cruising)...so at the higher sustained driving speed, the thermal clutch fan frees up a little HP since there is less "fan drag" on the engine.

A non-thermal clutch fan is always engaged... no matter what the air temp thru the radiator is.

Marc, I have a 1" spacer in my setup. I have the CVF Wraptor (w/AC). I have a 396. The water pump they provide is a reverse rotation pump but I do not remember if it is a long or short WP. I am using a 1" spacer on my fan. The spacer kit comes with different length bolts (at least the one I purchased). The spacer puts the fan at just the right position into the shroud. If this is the one you are seriously looking at, they sell it with a remote reservoir PS pump. I bought the attached reservoir pump and the adapter below and got it to fit (They told me it would not fit).
There is something else I did; The WP pulley, since it is aluminum, wears aluminum off of the pulley onto the belt, causing it to turn silver. I did not like this. So, I had my pulley hard anodized (Type 3) black. Now it does not rub aluminum off onto the belt. I really like this brand system. It has an 8-ribbed belt, I think the only one. I like it better than March or any other brand.

Ok I got it . It is.m.low profile. I will do as you. Just called and ordering the CVF systzm with the same C3 finish and remote steering pump.
This order is through BPE with the motor and must go.
Then i ll take.my.time for details...and will double check with you 😀.

Dears,

Some remaining questions.
  • CVF serpentine finish : Is the polish aluminum CVF version going to last for our w-e drivers? I am not yet decided to go with the extra 195$ C3 finish... I don't like the idea to need to clean and polish the system as the access is not so easy.
  • water neck : I 'd like a new one, I have an old leaking Mr Gasket . What do you think of
Spectre Performance SPE-4933 Spectre Performance Water Necks | Summit Racing
- for the T56 with adaptator plate on original belhousing, Mc Leod recommends this pilot bearing, but it is out of stock with long lead times:
McLeod Racing 8-1094-4 McLeod Pilot Bearings and Bushings | Summit Racing
Is there another replacement pilot bearing 0.600 extended?

Regards,

Marc

My engine is not a show engine, so it sounds like the extra $195 is money well spent for your desires. Did you try going to Tremec to search out the pilot bearing?

It looks like they do not sell direct, but maybe they will have a list of dealers that will have what you need.

Here is one location; Holley Pilot Bearing

what is the thickness of your adapter flange?

1/4"?

if so the extended "lip" of the Allstar one seems to be very close to that.....you could even put a appropriate size washer (fits over small end) to space it out slightly further if needed. There is plenty of bearing that would be inside the crank if you did use a washer
