i have a 67 camaro that i am installing a 350 into. it had a 454 and when installing the 350 the left hand header touches the steering box. so i look at the frame mounts, they look tall. i have another set part 3945508 and 3945507 these are shorter stands. will installing these stands fix the problem? or what do they fit?

I may be wrong on this and someone will chime in to correct me but I have seen in the catalogs different engine mounts for a 327 and 350 and also for a B/B. I have a 67 with a 350 and I bought from NPD the mounts that are for a 350. I did a mock-up once I installed the 3rd gen steering box and I have no probelems so far. Also if you do a search in the Engine thread you will find some good info about this issue.

There is alot of info on David Pozzi's site about frame stands and engine mounts.

http://www.pozziracing.com/camaro_engine.htm

The 3945508 and 3945507 are for a '69 350. They would work well for you, but you would need '69 Tall and narrow engine mounts. I have those same frame mounts and energy suspension engine mounts. (poly) and all fits well.

PM me, if you have questions.

Something doesnt sound right. If the previous owner had the correct BB frame mounts and motor mounts on the engine it would have moved the motor over to the pass side about an inch or so. If you put the sb on those frame stands and the header hits the steering box then they either werent bb frame mounts or there are issues with miss matched frame mounts and motor mounts. If it was correctly set up for a bb and it was a 4spd car the crossmember would be different also. Your best bet is to get matched smallblock frame and motor mounts. Good luck

Just a thought for consideration. On my sb and I think with others when installing headers I had to jack up the drivers side to mount the headsers. It is tight but will work. Also if you ever think of adding a HEI large cap dist. to provide enough room for it without dimpling the firewall. You need different mounts. I dimpled mine and found out later. Do a search to get it right. I don't want to give you bad info.

I second lifting up the drivers side to get the header in... and having to dimple the fire wall for and HEI to fit...

I have a set of of sb stands that came out of my 67... they're powder coated and are just sitting in my garage if you're interested in them... Send me a PM if so

That's common. Maybe if changing to a Gen 3 setup might give you more room, but I don't know that for a fact.
3rd gen box will either be the same or worse. Some 3rd gen boxes have a lip on the side that people are having to grind off for header clearance.

do a search for threads from 5 or 6 years ago about motor mounts.
the 327/307 small block mounts put the motor a bit forward and to the right from where the 302/350 mounts are, so headers that were designed on a "mule" with a 307 or 327 will probably not clear the steering box on a car with 302/350 mounts.
on my Nova- a factory 307 car- Dynomax headers cleared the box with about 1/2" of clearance around the box- they must have used whatever small block powered car the local Chev dealer had on the lot to engineer the header, and it probably had a 327- but when i replaced them with a set of Hedman's- which were probably designed using a 302 or 350 powered car- i had to dimple the tube. an HEI distributor cleared the firewall with about an inch to spare on that Nova- but on a 70 i had many moons ago that was a factory 350 car, i had to mangle the firewall with a Ford Tool to get it to clear..
so, to summarize- if an HEI distributor clears, then you have 307/327 mounts, and Dynomax headers will fit perfectly, but Hedmans (and Hookers, i think) won't.

The reason that the 302/350 frame stands are different is because the 302's and 350's came with 8" harmonic balancers. By moving the engine back and up slightly, it gave more room so it would not hit the STOCK swaybar. I say STOCK as you may still have to shim a larger aftermarket swaybar from hitting. They were not worried about an HEI fitting because HEI's were not born yet. Also Novaderrick is correct about the headers... it wasn't GM's fault, The header manufactures just never figured it out. You can tell they don't know what they are talking about when they mention small block mounts. There are more than one set of small block mounts, Einstien. Why are the '69s different ? In '69 GM went to an interlocking type engine mount, because of earlier problems. The new engine mount was thicker, so they had to change the frame stands to make it all fit.

It should. I have 350 frame stands and Hooker Headers. If you do switch to '69 frame mounts, you will also need '69 engine mounts. (tall and narrow)
