68 Dash Pad with Custom Interior?

Friend has what he thought was a 68 Dash Pad which he has had as a spare for some time now. I went to look at it to purchase for our 68 restoration. When he pulled it out of storage we both noticed the chrome ribbing which he did not remember. Were those pcs. added to the dash for a custom interior? That is what we assumed. Other point is the texture is smoother than an orig. one I have and the orig. dash pad in his survivor 68 Z/28. Was this common to note differences in texture?

Good, I was hoping to find that out.....

The stainless trim was not a separate option but was part of Special (Z23) and Custom (Z87) interior options.
The texture does look a little smooth, are you sure it's original?
I was checking the white book yesterday and reviewed the Z23 option and was wondering if what they called "moldings" was that or not. And yes I believe/think it to be original because the legs (ends) are medal inside vs. the plastic used in repops back years ago, the legs metal male tab is exactly the same, and the whole underside is about a mirror image to an original, plus he has had it for a long time.

Chick,
My original pad has the strip (deluxe interior), but mine does not look that smooth. You can definitely see the grain in mine.

Thanks Paul! It is smoother than both his survivor 68 and the one I have but everything else seems so correct????? Will continue to find more out.

Anyone out there have a pretty smooth 68 dash pad. Maybe some picture comparisons would help.

I have pics of an original pad. I'll post them later or send them to you. Not many people know what a factory pad looks like anymore. They think the aftermarket pads are correct but they are off as it pertains to correct contours. Even Just Dashes. If one ever sees a good original pad for sale it should be purchased. But they don't come cheap.

I replaced my dash pad, the one I took off had the stainless trim and on the part that extends down on each side it had a pin that went into a socket in the dash. The replacement had a stud and nut mount. I was just wondering if only originals had the pin-lock or if some aftermarket had that as well as stud and nut mount? I have not switched the trim, kinda like it just black. My old one has a silver stamp on the inside that looks like a letter then 1967 and to the left of that is what appears to be a circular silver stamp logo or something, can not read it. Just wondering how you tell if it is the original.

Studs are factory. Post a pic of the markings o the back if you can. Factory pads are not bloated and have a very distinct profile and contour, unlike aftermarkets.

Hi Chick, I can only echo what's already been said; The molding is part of Z23/87 options and the pattern does appear to be finer than my original. My guess is it's a factory replacement. As you know, it's quite common for factory replacement parts to have slight differences from originals. If the price was right, I'd grab it.

Hey Gar, could be as we cannot be sure of where it came from but it is a GM dash. Might have Jerry M. look at it when I pick up some items he is restoring.

click on my sig to look at my dash pad. it looks just like yours. mines untouched original, :D
Thanks Ernie, you be correct as the finish looks the same. What surprises me about this dash as the top has somewhat less grain then the front area??
