Hello,
I ran across a 68 RS/SS 396 4 speed today. Car has been sitting outside for a long time. It is complete and does run and drive. I didn't have a chance to check it out completely today, but just trying to get an idea on value. The car needs floor pans, trunk pan, and probably frame rails. Body looks good, but does need some work. Original Muncie Trans and 12 bolt rear. Engine is a 69 396. I don't have casting numbers yet. It does have a tach and console gauges. Interior is in great shape, and has high back bucket seats. They are wanting 8k firm for the car. Is this a decent price on the car since it needs so much? Any help is appreciated.

PS I current have a 68 Camaro numbers matching 327 4 speed and a 2014 ZL1 that is getting some more to fast parts.

If it is a 68 RS/SS with a big block it doesn't matter about the work that needs to be done. I would jump on it for 8 grand. A car like that with everything still on it is worth a mint. I would go back and do the check. Rear ID, Transmission ID number, Engine ID and anything else that's original to the car. I hope you can weld it will save you a lot of money.

There was a small dent by the bumper on the passenger side quarter, and it looked like some bondo coming off and some rust on the drivers quarter. I will have to check the rest of the body also, but at a glance it didn't look too bad. Car is completely stock it appears, down to the original SS wheels.

Are you interested in purchasing the Camaro or just telling us about your find? When I was looking for a 67 Camaro I knew that I wanted the RS options on it. I didn't think about the engine that was in it because I knew it would be coming out anyway. I was lucky enough to find a 1971 big block 454 engine next door to my mom. The guy and his son had pulled it out of his 71 Chevelle and left it sitting on the ground covered with a tarp. After I had started putting my Camaro back together I cleaned the cowl tag up so I could read it. Turns out to be a RS/SS that came with a 350 engine, 4 speed trans (long gone), Air Conditioning, with Deluxe interior.

I am interested in purchasing the car. The car was at a garage, and the owner was out of town. The guy called the owner to make sure he still wanted to sell. The owner said he would talk to his wife and let me know on Monday. The car was previously for sale for 8k, hopefully it still will be, or maybe even cheaper...haha

Travis104, I wish you good luck on your purchase of the 68 big block Camaro. You know that just kills me when you are talking to a man about a car he has maybe for sale. Ain't nothin pisses me off any more than hearing I'll talk to my wife and get back to you. I guess he ain't got no balls and she wears the pants in his family. If I wanted a new truck I didn't go beg my wife if I could have one. I would jump in my old truck and check out a few dealers to see if they even had anything I liked. Then if I saw something I liked I would find a salesman to test drive it. If I liked it I signed the papers and took it home and leave them with my 2 to 3 year old truck. When I found my Camaro I went to my credit union at work and withdrew the money from my savings account to buy it.

No doubt. It is kind of frustrating. I am just guessing on the frame rails since it needs new floor pans and trunk pan. My other 68 needed frame rails, as well as floors and trunk.
I def want to check out the quarters and rockers closely, and also get the vin and trim tag.
Let's just say worst case scenario, the car needs floors, trunk, frame rails, and quarters. What do you'd think a good price would be on the car needing that amount of work?

That's true. If in fact the guy decides to sell, I will get some pictures and more technical data. I just didn't know if 8k was way to much for the amount of work I already know the car needs. I know the market is strong on first gens, and I know the SS/RS 4 speed with a big block is a pretty good combo. Any ideas on how many like that were made? I need to also find which hp rating the 396 is, and which Muncie Trans it has, as well as rear gear ratio.

I wasn't really looking for one as I just purchased a new truck last weekend, and a new ZL1 6 months ago, but didn't want to pass up on a good deal (if it is one) on a fairly rare car I think....especially just 20 miles from my house.
