Very cool George! The light is just around the bend now! :beers: What color stripes are you going with? and are you clearing over the stripes to bury them?

Discussion starter · #823 ·
the thought is to lay the flames out in single stage

gotcha!
The stripes will be single stage Ermine White, black rockers and lower doors, lower and upper trim. To bury the stripes would mean re-clear on header, fenders, and doors. Thinking that I'll pass on the re-clear at this point. Another reason, if I re-clear the front and middle of the car, crazy as the color and light tricks are, then the back half could look different.

My daughters and grandbabies are in town. I've been ditching class at midday for a week now

Using the factory paint/decal combo or all paint? When you lightly cut and buff the stripe, there is no longer a hard tape edge. Many say you can catch it with your fingernail and there is wax build up at the tape line. Not so if you do the job correctly. Repro RS headlight and grille assembly? Did you fit it all prior to paint? Just did one and out of the box fit was not pretty. Needed work to make it right. And people wonder why it costs so much to do a car.

stencils, all paint. yes, plan to cut and buff afterwards. Am now pretty fair at buffing.
Factory stripes were far from pretty if you see a low mile factory car..
I had some of the parts, good fit....wish me luck on the rest!
Soooo many odds and ends,
drilling out a broken off ext rear hanger 1/4" took forever. more to to to riv nut the passenger side hanger/floor mount, gotta drill the dvr rail rear hanger holes.

Time winding down. Class 1/2 days with the kids in town, ditched a few days too. The kids and grandbabies are now gone but an old racer pal will be here FRI and SAT, racing SAT in the Elky. Mounted the 295s 65 MT DRs on my 8" WELDS the other day

The last of the house guests left yesterday afternoon.
WHAT A WEEKEND!
Picked Tom (pal of 35 years) up from those he was in WA to visit for a graduation FRI midday. To lunch, tour of the town, up to Delta Camshaft, etc, etc, then an evening thrashing on my 70 El Camino for racing SAT. Early SAT departure to the track, met my people there....half the fun already! Made three progressively faster passes in the Elky during time trials. Sad to say, I was 'runner-up' Round 1. Elky drove well, got me home too. Clean-up then a nice dinner on the town w/ wifey and Tom. SUN big sight-seeing for Tom of Seattle then airport. Stocked up on food and such on the way home. Once all done, rest time out back beside my little fire pit contraption.

Today, back to class. Exhaust war. Repro ext going on, kinda....
DVR side tailpipe fits perfectly where it should dump. Passenger side too tight by 1-1.5" but still working it, lunch now over, back at it

Sweet-looking Elky there! :beers:

Todd,
Elky is traction-challenged so went with more gear and a way bigger tire.
Unsure what to make of it after a few passes. The real answer involves a whole evening of testing. Want to also test the 275 with the new gearing...but more suspension work up front will be required. I bought Elky in 2005, after Iraq, drove it daily w 350/th350 my last year in the Army. Was pic slow, tractionless 15.10s. Then mild 454 13.3s down to 12.7s. Now this 12.0s down to 11.7s. STREET BEAST, decent manners, really amazed my visiting friend.

Re-looked the tail pipe fitment. AHA! Bend caused some swelling keeping both muffler ends of the pipes from going fully in, thus too wide at the tips. All better now. I think. No more clamps going on until the engine gets bolted in. Closer now for this happening. Will have to put the car on the ground, check for clearance with the diff, etc. Then the fuel tank goes in.

HOPING this set without the resonators will be sufficiently quiet for me and wifey. This is the "Z28" 2 1/4" set. Resonators could go right here replacing these pipe sections

Todd,

Thanks, it was a wild 20 years and 8 days!

The exhaust is mostly in (omit war story), rear of car under stuff mostly in, The firewall and undercar goodies cleaned, painted, some repainted...... Ready to take the nose off, black out the top of the firewall, install a lotta stuff...easy to do with no fenders Engine hoist has been returned so I'll shortly bring the engine and trans in. Set them in, hook-up, glass into the doors then final gap set, nose on, stripes, etc. Sooo nice wifey got a little bonus :beers:, pay for some of the tires. Seats are progressing at Don's garage-shop

Exhaust head pipe position position on the dvr side looks about right. Passenger side, hmmm, we'll see. Ragtop underside bolt-in brace was a chore to clean.

Front bumper side braces 3929903 and 4 pg 178 UPC 14 A2 #5, believe these should be semi gloss black. I see lots of these body color. Not on car til the metal all goes together, makes sense to me that they should NOT be car body color, Someone advise.

Dug out my blasted front bumper brackets. Hmmm, a few flecks of green remained. Got out my box cutter scraped, black under the green

People don't know, don't care or are too lazy to remove them when they paint the car. Years ago when we had these cars as daily beaters many received paint jobs just as cars do today and not every one got a fastidious paint job. All non body panel bolt on items such as those were not body color.

Bill,
I have that printed out now, plus another 69 list.

327 made it safely to BATES TECH. Making some room on the bench by installing rear cocktail shakers and such today. Lotsa stuff painted the last few days. Intake manifold will come off for blasting, R&R some ext studs, get dvr side cyl head plug out for temp sensor.

Wild speculation here but....looks like I will have to modify the main ext hangers to bring the pipes forward. More to follow on this, will take pics of any mods if needed.

More prep work today, nuts, bolts, some paint here and there as appropriate
Will work on the 327 as able early next week

Bad day today
Torched the exhaust donut bolts, they broke before coming out.
Torched cooled, heated, cooled, melted wax...tried everything, the plug side of dvr head will not come out. OTOH, passenger plug pulled out no sweat. So I plan a head side to side swap tomorrow.

I was soooo PO'd that I took my Ext manifold to my machinist to extract/drill out the stubs. No time for this side venture

Need to get after the inner fenders re RS linkage holes

OK Bill, little problem with our locations....but have thought about what we can do here

PLUG would NOT come out of the cyl head for a temp sender.

swapped heads over this morning

to work 1-5 today so I had to pack it in early.
Tomorrow, blast intake, odds and ends, put more parts onto the Camaro. probably work a full day there to try to catch up
