Purchased on E Bay a project 1969 Camaro. After the initial inspection on the VIN plate on the dash everything matched. Later we realized we needed to remove the dash for rust issues. At that point and a very close inspection of the VIN plate we noticed the VIN number was modified. Why I do not know. The title, paper work and the body stamped serial numbers on the car all match! I am at a quander for what to do. At this point I am $ 10,000.00 into the project. Any suggestions. Thanks Team Camaro

There are guys out there who is re-stamping VIN plates. Don't know who so you'll have to do some research. You can also get the police to stamp you out a VIN plate but usually, they do not look like the original one so that may not be appealing to you.

Tom Im confused as well. If you are saying the Title and hidden partial vins all match up but the VIN plate on top of the dash is different by a few numbers, ?? then you have a big issue. If the VIN plate was altered, thats a federal offense by who ever did it but it still leaves you with a problem. Contact previous owner and raise the question of VIN plate and hidden vins. See what he says.
Sooner or later the VIN plate numbers will have to be put on a title and thats where the **** will hit the fan for you. :(

So the hidden vin matches the title. Maybe the upper dash was changed and the original tag was thrown out by accicent, heard of that happening on here before.

If the hidden vin and title match the car should be legit, right? If it had been a tag job the hidden vin would not match that title.

I am confused, also.

The term "legit" can be widely interpreted in this instance, imo. Without knowing the previous owners intentions/circumstamces involving the restamped VIN, I don't(wouldn't) have enough information to make a determination to the legality of this situation :noway:. I would contact the previous owner(s)
