Trying to help a friend. He is now getting fuel smell in garage from tank after "a shop" (read the local hack shop) supposedly fixed something on his tank. I think it was his fill neck hose, not sure if 69's have a hose collar on their fill necks.

The guy thinks there is a small rubber line coming from his fuel tank which is just going nowhere but pointing up near his RR 1/4 panel. Gas comes out of it if he fills up over 1/2 a tank and I believe he says some on the garage floor

I don't have a 69 assembly manual. If anyone has that illustration page showing what connects to a 69 fuel tank and where a vent hose, if it has one, connects to or if there should be some form of check valve on it

its a 350/350 car which previously did not have this problem. It originally was a 6 cyl car

No vent on a 69 tank. The cap is vented. Fuel return line is integrated into the fuel sender assembly.

I have not got under my friends car to look but is there a short piece of rubber fuel line bridging the hard line from tank sending unit to fuel line that runs along PS frame towards engine like on my 67?

Not seeing that detail in illustration.

According to my friend he took the car in complaining of fuel smell in garage and shop said they put in a new filler neck gasket but now the problem is worse and raw fuel is dripping out. Unfortunately my friend is old and can't hear so it is very difficult to discuss this over the phone. I will swing by his house and see what I can determine.

Maybe the shop was referring to the gasket for the sender that goes in top/front of tank and if so the F'ed that up. Not sure what my friend said about a soft fuel line he see's going nowhere on rear PS

This shop is a crap shop that charges huge $ nd does crap work so maybe they fixed something but FU something else.

I told my friend to not park the car in a enclosed garage with leaking gas with a gas heated water heater.....

That line can drip when running if bad. Eventually sooner rather than later it will suck air and fuel pump wont pump and you are dead in the water. short piece of fuel line and two clamps. Nothing should when still and not running.

IDK what sending unit is in the car, it's not my car. Owner had no previous problem with fuel smell or drips so "something" is not right. He took it to some hack shop which may have F'ed it up or just did not fix it as it still leaks and smells

I have not had a chance to go over to the guys house to check it out yet

appreciate the comments guys

In 69 the 350's with 4 barrel Rochester carb had a return fuel line integrated into the gas system. The fuel filter has 2 connections to it as well as the gas tank connection with 2 tubes to connect too.. Sounds like 'maybe' someone cut off the return line and it's leaking. If the engine was changed and no longer needing the return line, that whole system needs to be corrected. That's dangerous the way it is.

The car is originally a 6 cyl.....

It is generally a mediocre built car with a 350/350 in it now where several shortcuts were taken. It has a single fuel line running to fuel pump and fuel pump to gas filter to carb

I suspect the owners car is leaking either from the sending unit in tank (seal) or the soft line from tank to line on frame......or possibly the tank itself has a leak. I have not been able to look at the car because the owner refuses to wear a mask and because he can't hear well he try's to come close so I can not help him in person under those conditions.

I told him to jack the rear of the car up, on stands, and look/feel in the sending unit area and the soft line and to otherwise look for where the gas is leaking

My initial post was asking if 69's did have some form of return line, which your posts notes some did but his did not if 6 cyl did not have them, and have offered text assistance but have not heard back from the guy. The shop he goes to is a known hack shop where he previously has had issues with anything they have previously done to the car...and stupid $ I might add
