It should be semi-gloss black (except if the car had black paint).

But I have heard every shade of black (from flat to gloss) and every shade of clear.
Is your car a big block? Is your car all original, or are you just going for the look?

I've been told by some that the tail pan and the rockers were the same black. I've owned this car since new, although the white is from a repaint about 40 years ago. The black paint on the rockers is original and appears to be a sort of "matte" black. Mine is a small block, so didn't

have the tail pan painted.

 

As akxtreme noted, only the big block SS cars got the blacked out tail light panel. Nothing stopping you from doing the same with your car, but if yours is a SB car and you are going for originality, don't black it out.
