How ya’ll are?
Have a question on replacing the trans in my 69 camaro.
It has a L1 427 cam/850 demon carb/rollers/msd and all the goodies as well as 12 bolt posi but not exactly sure what gear ,thinking around 370 to 390 with a t400 and b&m kit.
Looking to swap the T400 out to a later model auto with the overdrive such as the 700 r4 or equivalent for making the trips to the rod shows without a trailer.
The car has vintage ac and never runs hot even with it on down here in da bayous of Louisiana.
Made the trip to cruzin the coast in Ms., about 120 mile 1 way with no problems other than keeping it around 2500 rpm and guessing the speed around 60 according to how traffic was flying by me cause the speedo aint what it use to be!
Other than a few burnouts on cruze nights and a mustang here and there I don’t really dog the car that much so the track is not in the equation but I would like something with some durability.
Main question is which trans should I be looking at for the swap and how much difficulty is involved.
Is the 700r4 the best choice and if so are there certain ones to look at more than others.
This is without a doubt the best place I have found for info in the past on anything I have needed to fix or restore on my car and the knowledge is absolutely first rate from the staff as well as the readers.
Thanks for any and all help in the future,

Boogies

If you go with a 700R4 look for an 87 or newer. I swapped from a TH350 to a 700R4. It wasn't hard. I even rebuilt the tranny myself also. Which I had never done before. But it has taken my abuse. Just do alot of searches on the subject. There will be others to chime in on which tranny would be better. Have you checked into a GearVendors to go with your T400?

I plan on going with a 200r4 from bowtie overdrive. It looks to bolt right in same dimensions as my t350 and you won't have to cut the driveshaft.

I went from th350 to 700r and it works great on long road trips. My mechanic had to 'adapt' the crossmember and I had to have the driveshaft shortened and you need the kit for the horseshoe shifter that gives you the 4 forward speed selection (different detent plate). I love how it drops the rpm's down to around 1700 at 65mph :)

Here is photo of the crossmember with the front edge cut out to allow access to the pan bolts.

Bin there done that. 350TH to 700R4 to TH400. If I had to do it all over again I would spend the $$$ on 4l80e or TH400 with Gear Vendors OD unit. 700r4 is a good OD tranny up to certain HP (350-400). If you running a stout big block and like to drive the car hard on occasion, then 700R4 will be your weakest link and eventually your motors trophy. Then there is TV cable headache you'll have to mess with. Both 700 and 200 use the TV cable and it can be challenging to setup (and keep set) one of these.
