Sorry, it´s the same question like a few topics before, but the head line is better for my problem.
I´m owner of a 69´Camaro.
I saw pictures of different 10 bolt housings for GM Cars. I thought my Camaro is equippted with a 8,2" 10 bolt, but my housíng looks like the 8,5" type on the pictures. My housing cover doesn´t have a drain plug. It is in the housing itself, on the right drive shaft side.
How I could identify the 10 bolt (8,2 or 8,5" type) ?
Oh, one info : The stamped numbers on the housing are very rusty and so very difficult or impossible to read.

I know they have different size ring gear bolts and pinion nuts. But I'm not sure which size goes with which rear. Look at the bolt that holds the spider gear pin in the carrier. What size wrench will it take to remove the bolt? If it's a 5/16" wrench, it's an 8.5. If it takes a 1/2" wrench, it's an 8.2. Also you can check this which wil be a little easier, about how long is you pinion yoke? I know the 8.2 are really short, about 1" and the 8.5 are about 2.5".

an 8.5 has flat "ears" on the bottom of the housing that are parallel with the ground.an 8.2 is round. that is the easiest way to tell. also, some 8.2's have a cover that looks kind of like a 12 bolt, with the ridge on it. the newer ones didn't have that ridge. an 8.5 has no ridge on it, but is interchangeable with an 8.2 cover.you could make an 8.5 look like an 8.2 by grinding off the ears and putting an older style cover on it, for that "stealth bomber" thing..you probably have an 8.2.
