For the past year or two i have been considering a career change. Im 39 years old, not getting any younger and i figure if im going to make the leap now is the time. Im currently in medical sales and while its been very good to me over the years im not sure i can see myself doing it for the long haul. What i really want is to own my own business.

For a while now i have been thinking about/looking into starting or buying a powersports dealership. It would not be Harley dealership rather a metric dealer. Honda, Suzuki, Kawa, Yamaha Motorcycles, ATVs, Waverunners (live in the finger lakes of NY), accessories, apparel etc...

Ive researched the geographics a bit in terms of dealerships in the area and the local market but this is in the infancy stages to say the least. Just exploring the idea right now. I was curious if anyone here is in the business now and would be very curious to know their take/thoughts/insite etc...

I'm not in the business, but I frequent those businesses, and love those businesses. I just paid a guy 206 dollars to put the top end back together on my 400EX. I wanted it done right, and didn't trust myself to get it 100% right.

I say go for it. I know several small shops in my area, and they are fairly busy in the summer months. They charge good prices and do good work.

400EX eh? Cool, a fellow sport quad rider. I have a Raptor 700.

Craig,

Here is a dealer/shop that opened about 7 years ago and has become a major dealer in the entire region. They have acheived high volume sales and have some killer deals at times. I have dealt with them and even though they are now a large dealer, they are very much down to earth people. Just a site for you to view and get some motivation from. I'm not sure where about in The Lakes you are but I guess it would share some demographics with you as it is in Western New York.

I cant give you much input but I was suprised when the other day I went to a local Kawasaki dealership to order in a few parts for a ninja Im fixing up, any way for a moment I thought I was in the walmart checkout line on a sat. afternoon, no kidding the were stacked 8 deep at the parts counter. Looks like the powersports market is doing ok.

Wow, thats a nice dealership. And it does give me motivation for sure. That dealership would be almost 2 hours from me so the overlap would be minimal. Which looks like a good thing cause that place looks like it does quite a business.

I agree, the powersports dealers dont seem to be struggling. Ive been in one locally twice over the past 2 weeks and it was very busy.
