Battery Location

Need some help with my battery relocation. I am planning on the trunk but not sure on the location. I know many opt for the right flat in the trunk area (which I think is a holdover from non-posi days) and it's a really easy install. But I am adding an amp and kind of want to balance things out. Thinking of these two options and welcome any and all feedback:

Option 1 - Battery and amp on left and right side of the hump in the forward section of the trunk space. I would need to add stand offs to level out the equipment but not really a big deal

Option 2 - Battery on right shelf and amp on the left shelf. Makes mounting a little easier but wiring a little more difficult.

Option 3 - Battery on the right and amp on the front shelf section. Maybe the best of both worlds.

I would appreciate all comments and any photos of installed equipment. I have never done this so can't really have too much info thrown at me.

How are you handling battery venting, or not? If you track your car you will likely need a vented box which complicates the space problem. NHRA doesn’t give AGM’s a pass, at least not here. Dunno about other sanctioning bodies. I am going to handle mine by making the box and seeing if I get in a battle over approval.

I use Odyssey batteries. No vents required and I don’t care about the NHRA....

I put the battery on the right side.

Battery is installed on the right side to counter act engine torque; not whether you have a posi or not. Has to be vented to the out side unless you build a NHRA Spec fire wall between the rear seat and the trunk (which is still required if you put a fuel cell in the trunk area). I believe all of the sanctioning bodies want the battery secured (clamped down) such that it can not move in the case of an accident, and in a vented box to limit fire hazard.

Thanks for all the replies. I guess I should have clarified - no track time or anything like that. Also appreciate the clarification on the torque vs. traction - I always thought it was the latter. Either way, I am using an open battery hold down and an Optima battery so just trying to decide location. I looked at the Odyssey set up as well. A lot of the Cobra builders are using those for the compactness and convenience.

You can mount battery in trunk on right hand side, battery plates should be perpendicular to longitudinal centerline of Camaro.
Old school trick was moving battery forwards/backwards in aiding traction as suggested.
You can run a 1/0 AWG cable, TRXF-84 comes to mind, for battery cable and run up over wheelhouse and into trough under rocker panel strip and through a rubber grommeted hole under heater to solenoid,
Then you should run n 8 AWG charge wire from alternator BATT stud to solenoid post for recharging battery.
Unless you decide in running a Ford solenoid for starting, you're on your own.
I did the above to my '68 and had no problems with a live cable.

Mine is on the right flat behind wheel well, amp is center front shelf, I used the ford 'noid since I didn't like he hot wire hot all the time, and fuel cell right in the middle near the stock filler neck.
Battery is in an ebay battery mount, its an Optima red top, I made a trunk firewall, battery not vented, rear disconnect in stock gas cap location, and never been hassled at the track.(but I also only run TNT days).

Back when the car was stock I got more grief than ever :clonk:
