Biggest Tire with Mini-Tubs and stock Leaf springs?

Hi guys,

I'm going to be doing a mini-tub this winter on my car, but don't want to spend all the money up front for the new rear suspension AND wheels/tires. I'm wondering what size tire I could get away with with a DSE mini-tub and a POL shock relocation kit on my current 18x9.5" wheels? I know the Ideal size for that wheel is a 275, but would a 285 or 295 fit what I'm asking for?

Thanks,
Ryan

I had 285/60R15 SH tires in my stock wheel wells on 15" wheels with 4.5" backspace. They did rub on hard corners and off camber bumps. So, I'm pretty sure 285's or 295's will fit with a mini-tub and shock relocation.

Best thing I can tell you is to get a piece of cardboard and do a mockup of the tire size with the wheel....cheap and easy. (basically making a C shape) Is what I did.

If you use DSE offset shackles you’ll need a narrowed tank. Not notched, narrowed….

So, I'll say that my ultimate plan is to go with one of the 4 link kits out there in conjunction with the mini-tubs, but for the time being I wanted to stick with my current leaf spring setup. I need to get new tires for the spring next year, so I was thinking maybe I'll just do the mini-tubs this winter and get the largest tires I can with my current setup. I know hindsight is 20/20, but I didn't realize you could get a simple shock relocation kit and use mini-tubs with leaf springs... Without looking into it, I assumed that with the mini-tub you had to go with an aftermarket rear suspension. If I had known, I would have done the mini-tubs during my restoration process.

I saw that when I was reading the instructions for the DSE tubs. The mods look pretty minor, so hopefully it's not too bad.

I went out a few days ago and measured from the inside of my current tires to the leaf spring and it was just over 2" or space.
