I have a pair of untouched, used but in "bolt on" shape, SBC cylinder heads that I am trying to get some info on. Can anyone tell me about head #8917291. What are they off of? Any good? What do you think they are worth?

Many Thanks,

Showdog

The 3917291 and 292 castings are probably the Best Fuelie head you can get. They are usually found on 67 and 68 2 & 4 BBl 327's. The fact that they have 1.94/1.55 valves make them ideal candidates to install 2.02 and 1.6 valves when a valve job is required as there is plenty of fresh seat material which are normally pounded and sunken by the 2.02 / 1.6 version of these castings. The spring pockets can be opened to 1.140" to accept larger springs and stud bosses tapped for screw in studs. If you want to learn everything about these Casting Read "Grumpy Jenkens".

However; today, with the costs of machining the newer Vortec Design will out perform the Legendary SBC Fuelie but you can be assured that the Fuelie is much stronger and will not warp like the Vortec or after market Aluminum Heads if you should by chance ever over heat your engine. A good set of Fuelies are in my opinion still a Great Cylinder head and will rev a SBC to well over 8000rpm when prepped in Grumpy Jenken Fashion.

pdq67: I think your right the 291's are 2.02/1.6's and the 292's are 1.94/1.55's from GM. Personally I would prefer to start with the 292's for a Fuelie build up as you can seat new 2.02/1.6 Valves nice and High in the Chamber after replacing the Guides.

Here's an Old Pic of my 292's done to Jenkens Specifications that included Months of Porting:

Thanks to all of you for responding! his is a great site and I'm appreciative of your knowledge. Do you think I should sink money into having accessory holes drilled in or put my money into a set of vortec? This motor is going into my daughters 76 Camaro and it will already has enough juice to get her into trouble.
