There seems to be a lot of confusion about the different styles for the different years, and also the ones used in the firebirds.

I know of a few people that bought / have the wrong style for their model.

Maybe we can come up with a gallery as a sort of 'spotters guide' for each style and model to make life easier at the swap meets or online auctions?

yes they are. they were a lot easier a few years back. now everyone has seemed to have scooped them all up for their restos. correct me if im wrong but places like ebay has gone from used or NOS parts from private sellers to aftermarket business that sell a lot of repo items. in the early 2000's, I remember that it was a pain going through 75 pages of ebay auctions for 69 camaros. If you check now, there are 1542 pages and mostly repo items.

I just wanted to post something that I just verified about 69 Firebird rear cocktail shakers. I looked on line and I found a few postings were people thought 69 Firebird rear shakers should fit a 69 Camaro, but no confirmation of an install. I just purchased a rear pair of 69 Firebird cocktail shakers for my 69 Camaro convertible and they bolted right in. No problems. The only difference is the 69 Camaro rears use 3 mounting tabs. 2 on the bottom and 1 on the top but the Camaro has provision to mount 2 on the top. The 69 Firebird rear shaker has 4 mounting points. 2 on the bottom and 2 on the top and line up perfectly to the 69 Camaro mounting points. I just thought I would share this actual install detail.

Thanks,

Ted

I don't think this was ever answered...
From the Gentleman who inquired about his Firebird Seat bottom and other Firebird Parts on his LA assembled Camaro.
If I am not mistaken YES Firebirds and Camaros were built together in LA.
ALSO
Begining in April/May of Calender Year 1969 they began being built together in Norwood OH too.
The Firebird's production, previously done at GM Lordstown OH was moved to Norwood so Lordstown could be refitted to build the Vega.

The 69 Assm shows the dampener revision as 11/22/68 - any idea when the changeover actually did occur?
Has anyone compared the two different part numbers for each position?
If so are there any discernible differences?

This is more oriented towards, restoration but figured this was a good starting point. I want to Power Coat all 4 cocktail shakers. Part of the process requires baking at 400 degrees. Is there any harm / risk involved if I pore out all the ATF fluid and then proceed with powder coating !

Thanks.

Should I assume that if I don't have these "shakers" mine isn't a true convertible? I think the last owner chopped the top on a 68 and installed a convertible top. It doesn't have these shakers in the trunk and it doesn't have that brace under it. I'll show you what mine does have and it's weird but I guess it gets the support it needs. Will take a pic tonight.

I went to install my rear shakers after I had the body work done but the hole for the top doesn’t exist. Mine is a 68 RS vert. I started searching and found these...
https://www.camarocentral.com/1967_1968_Quarter_Panel_Brace_Convertible_LH_p/she-642.htm

However those don’t look like the brace in the assembly manual. So I have no place for the top to bolt. Can easily drill for bottom holes.

Was hoping to see a pic of a few 68 verts here but most pic links aren’t working. Need a little help. What brace am I missing?

There is a reinforcement plate (below the trunk pan in the area of the cocktail shakers), which should have been on the trunk pan (most complete trunk pans come with them installed) for a convertible, be sure you have these, or the body shop failed to transfer your originals. The plates overlap the outer most lip on the rear frame rail as well. I searched but did not find where the vertical stiffener is reproduced, but you can P.M. me and I can get pics from my 67, and email to you if you wish - reportedly the 67 / 68 rear shakers are identical FWIW

Where did you buy that trunk pan. I’ve checked Ricks, Classic, and Camaro central and the only one I can find with the braces is this...
https://www.camarocentral.com/product_p/she-796a.htm

I’m not paying 2k just to get the braces. My shop did apparently throw my old ones out. If I can find just the rear pan with them for 300 then I can cut them out and weld them in. Otherwise I either fab them or give up shakers altogether and go with hotchkis frame strengthening.

Thoughts?

A complete trunk pan assembly will have the lower convertible shaker braces. My trunk pan was made by DynaCorn. There are many others that make the same thing.

The part you found was a floor pan and trunk pan. Just the trunk pan will cost $280.00. Below is a link to a vendor. There are many others.

Many coupe owners put the same pan on their car and sometimes remove the braces for authenticity. You might post in the want ads that you desire to purchase only the reinforcement plates. I am sure there are a few coupe owners would love to get rid of the extra junk laying around in the garage.

The upper bracket that is below the quarter panel has two nuts welded to it. There is no way to miss them. I am worried that maybe you have an upper coupe bracket. I am not sure how the shop got a coupe bracket to fit a convertible.

Funny, I bought my pan from classic. This is the only one listed for 68.
https://www.classicindustries.com/product/1968/chevrolet/camaro/parts/c337.html
No braces.

The one you showed is for a 69. Classic, ricks, and central don’t sell a 68 with the braces. I finally found one here that appears to have the braces for a 68. I’ve sent notes to them to verify.
Trunk Floor Complete for 68 Chevrolet Camaro

Are you saying the 69 pan is the same? Or that I can buy the 69 pan and the braces are the same so I can cut them out and use on my 68?

I am sorry. I assumed the bottom brace for a 68 would be the same as the 69. I am wrong.

The bottom plate stiffener on a 1969 model is just a flat piece of metal with a 90 degree flange bent down on two edges. There are two nuts welded to the plate. It would not be too hard to fabricate one. I would cut out a flat piece of metal to the desired shape and then weld a second strip of metal to the flat piece to create the flange.

The DynaCorn complete trunk floor pan for 67 has them on the pan - part# 1046B. Even DynaCorn sells the 68 without the bottom bracing, which I don't believe is correct for the convertible. FWIW Or, as suggested earlier, post a wanted add in the classifieds, as surely someone has an old pair they either took out of a 67, or removed for install in a coupe.

I have a question...do the shakers ever go bad or need replacing? Is there anything inside them or are they just a weight, so to speak? Not new to cars, but I'm new to convertibles and new here also. Just joined today and recently bought a 69 convertible 2 months ago. First post too!! :boxing::grin2:

With regards to the spatter paint process, has it been determined whether or not the cocktail shakers were installed and secured prior to or after the spatter paint process? I've heard that they may have been suspended from hooks off the trunk drip rail during spatter process. Have seen pix of original, survivor cars with and w/o spatter on the shakers and /or fasteners. Thanks!
