I am trying to take out the ignition switch in my 69 and can't figure out how it comes out. I have read on here that there is a slot to put a screwdriver into to release it??? I have been messing with this for over an hour and can't seem to find what SLOT they are talking about.
If ANYBODY has a pic of the column that would be really helpful.
Thanks
Jack

No I don't have pictures, if you have it torn down to the point where you can see the slots you got it made. OK at the 12 oclock spot you can see the rack that goes down to the switch, 1/2 an inch down from that and to the right is a slot, right next to that is another slot[BESIDE THE BOSS THAT THE SCREW GOES IN TO HOLD THE TURN SIGNAL SWITCH] you might even need to break through casting, take a small screwdriver or whatever it takes to depress the clip on the tumbler. Once you do it your going to think-YOU GOT TO BE KIDDING ME THATS IT. P.S. You don't the key. I hope this helps.

Even when you find the correct slot it is not all that easy to depress the locking tab. Press along the right side of the slot. The lock cylinder should easily slide right out.

BTW, you are trying to replace the ignition lock cylinder. The ignition switch is down under the dash, mounted on top of the steering column. A linkage system with a long rod connects the lock cylinder to the ignition switch.

Good luck,
Jim

how do you disassemble to that point? Is a puller required. I have the steering wheel off already, but no farther?
Thanks

A lock plate depresser is required to get the lock plate off (under plastic with notches around the edge). The tool pushes the lock plate down so you can remove the snap ring from the grove. only push down far enough to get the ring out.

You can get it off with out the lock plate depresser. You will have to have someone else helping you. You will have to push down on the round plate. It has a spring under it. Then take a pick or small screwdriver and pull the round metal ring off. It is a pain to get off though.

Here is the location for some papers on disassembly and repair of the 1969-1976 Camaro steering column. You didn't mention if you had a tilt column or a standard (non-adjustable) column but both papers can be found at the following address.
Go to: www.corvettefaq.com
Click on: Jim Shea's Steering Papers
Click on: A & F-Car Steering Papers
Scroll down to the Standard Steering Column Section or the Tilt Column Section
Download: Disassembly & Repair Paper #1 and Disassembly & Repair Pic #1.

If all you want to do is remove the lock plate, the above Paper #1 and Pic #1 is all you need. If you want to disassemble further you may need to download further D&R Papers and Pics.
