Edelbrock carb, fill float bowls?

I the car sits for a long time,ie: winter, Will the gas evaporate out of the float bowls, and if so how can I check them and re-fill before firing the engine. I have a flat tappet cam and I dont want to spend a lot of time cranking everything over. I have a Edelbrock 1411 on a 454ci.

On the sides of the air horn are two trapezoid shaped openings. These are the bowl vents.

Stick a pipe cleaner to see if fuel is there. Probably dry. Might even sniff the vents to not smell bad gas, pungent odor. If there is bad gas, a lift off of the carb top, carefully to not rip the gasket for reuse, will show the story of condition. Mucky and smelly, remove carb and soak in carb cleaner to remove varnish. Blow dry all passages to clean out debris.

If fairly clean, pour fuel thru vents, about 1/4 cup, and it should fire up if timing is correct and choke set correctly. If engine runs longer than 15 seconds, then fuel pump and lines are primed, otherwise, blow into gas tank and to pressurize and push fuel up to pump with disconnected inlet line at pump. Maybe alittle more to clean fuel line into a bucket.

After rereading your post, its only been since winter, so not much of a problem. Smelly fuel comes from a year or more of sitting.

Good luck.

Insert key, turn clock wise, and go!
IMHO, not necessary.
The fuel pump will get fuel to the carb in a matter of seconds, wouldn't recommend filling the bowls, I thought of this when I built a motor but was told not to.
Even if you filled the bowls it would run until they got dry and then die and not restart until the pump refills them anyways.

While cranking the engine, it doesn't take that long for the fuel pump to do it's job of filling up the carb bowls and the oil pump to do it's job of oiling the bearings!.....I've been doing it this way for over 20 years and never had an engine failure!

The switch labelled FUEL PUMP fills carbs pretty darn quick and easy. Sorry, I couldn't resist. :)If it doesn't have that switch, Ether it (aerosol carb cleaner is good too) ,or pour some gas down the vents and some down its gullet won't hurt. If you do grind on it without pre-filling, some rapid pumping of the accelerator makes em go quicker because the fuel will get to the acc pump before any flow circuits get any.

I always pour a 1/4 cup or so, of gas down the barrels, and it will start right up. My mechanical pump takes a while to pump gas from the tank. If it quits, you didn't pour in enough gas. Remember for the next time so you don't flood it out. Pour in a little bit more and she'll go !
