How big of a centrifugal blower is too big?

Title says it all really.

My friend with the 383 stroker (AFR 195 heads, 8.8:1 compression, forged crank, H beams, SRP pistons, Weiand 177 blower) motor I built last winter has the bug to put an F1R Procharger on it instead of the 177. I am telling him that a D1SC would be more then enough. He plans on underdriving the F1R so he has right about 10 psi boost. Unfortunately, the current 177 blew a seal, lost its oil, and ate the drive so a new blower must be put on one way or another.

Would the real big blower WAY underdriven have lag (like a too big turbo)? or would it be just fine? I am not a blower expert by any means but I am thinking it would be faster and more reliable with the "medium sized" blower. And, by the way, he is planning on an intercooler.

The car will never go faster then 10.0 because of the roll bar and other NHRA/IHRA requirements so a bigger engine and a lot more boost is not really in the plans. I am figuring that 650-700 HP should get him there in his 3600 lb 69 Camaro. The car is getting mini-tubbed and ladder bars as we speak so it should hook reasonably well.

That car should scream. I would check with Procharger and see what they suggest. I agree with you that he doesn't need a huge supercharger. With an intercooler he doesn't need to slow down a larger supercharger to be efficient. 10lbs of boost should be VERY easy. Now keeping it in the 10's may be an issue, but, nothing more cage can't fix.

Maybe even look at a Y trim Vortech. Not huge but can produce I think almost 30 pounds of boost. I am noticing more and more guys leaving the intercooler off the cars and running meth kits. The meth seems to work great.
I am not familiar with the F1R procharger. From what I can tell they run from 20-45 psi. If the F1R is the charger I believe I have seen then it is huge and more than he will need. IMO.

That F1R is good for 1300 HP. Kinda big for his goals. I built a fairly mild 406 with a D1SC that makes 700 rwhp on 14 psi of boost and no intercooler. I think the D1SC easily meets your power goals, plus the smaller diameter fits a bit easier.

I've sent several people to Frank at http://www.gpsuperstore.com for very good pricing on the Prochargers.

The F series have a step up and run bigger blower pulleys then D series for the same level of boost. Because of the larger pulley there is less belt slip problems. There would be no problem running the F1R at 10LBS, but it is really quite over kill. The cost difference is substaintial, and the F1R is LOUD.

Even if if your friend had dreams of stepping up horsepower someday, with 383 inches, the D1SC, as Jody explained, will be fine to 800-900HP.

If it were my recomendation, I would look at the D1SC

Thanks Frank. That's pretty much what I've been telling him, but I just don't have the experience with these blowers to be able to explain exactly why.

not to hi jack post but im lookin into running a blower also soooo which size would you say has enuff potential for making 700-800 flywheel hp . also ive seen diff types of gears/angles inside blowers to adjust top end low end power or torque which is better and which do you recommend?

I just looked at my post from last night, at 11 oclock, after another 14 hour day in a row, during the SEMA thrash and see I mis quoted a bit. The D1SC is a 700HP to 800HP blower. Your really spinning the crap out of it to make more then that. All Procharger are speced out for each specific application, they will choose all internals and pulleys.
