That shouldn't be a problem. What ISP do you have? The only issue that you sometimes run into is that the ISP only allows a certain MAC address to connect. You can resolve that isse by cloning the MAC on your broadband router.
I take it that you have a Linksys wireless router? I have a SMC wireless router and normally have 4-5 machines connected to the internet. 2-3 via wireless. I can sit on my back patio and surf
You probably want to make sure that you enable encryption on the router and I don't advertise my SSID or your neighbors my be able to use the connection as well.
huh????? I have a Direcway business system that on the satelitte modem has 4 ethernet ports to run up to 4 computers on the internet. I'am only using 1 which goes to my wireless router. My problem is I loose reception on my laptop when I go to any of the bedrooms or downstairs. I have a wireless reciever card for the downstairs computer but untill I can get reception with the lap top I really did not want to tear down the downstairs computer if I can wireless to work. My wife also informed me that there will be no wires running all over so thats why I went wireless.
Thanks,
Mike
You need a better antenna on the access point, check out www.fab-corp.com who sells omni antennas, get a new 6-8dbi omni with a pigtail that will allow it to hook into the existing linksys RP-TNC connection. Then this access point and antenna should be placed in the middle of the house so that its signal can reach all parts of the house the same.
My Dlink DI624 arrived yesterday, this weekend Im setting up my laptop on wireless and I expect it to run a good 60' from the promo literature.
My router has the one wireless antenna and 4 ethernet ports for the hardwire if you need it. Sounds like similar situations. I will be disappointed if I can only get 30 feet away from it out of the box. An external antenna may be the way to go then.
I've had my D-Link DWL-1000AP for years. It is setup in my shop which is about 40 feet from my house. I can get reception with my laptop anywhere in the house, out on the street, even in the neighbors yard! This is good and bad, good because I get reception but bad because so can others. I have a firewall and use encryption to ensure that my computers are the only ones that get internet and pier to pier access via the access point.
If you have a 2.4GHz 802.11b (11Mbps) or 802.11g (54Mbps) it should cover a range of about 100-150 feet indoors depending on wifi hub placement, wall construction and emf interfearence from phones, tv's and other electronics. My neighbor's signal reaches my house at 25% strength from about 80-100 yards... If your signal is dead at 30 feet you have something going on that is restricting it.
There is a newer 54Mbps 802.11a that uses a less crowded 5GHz band width but it's range is much shorter at 25-75 feet indoors...
D-Link publishes much greater ranges than the Linksys ranges I stated above.
