How hot should a rear differential get?

Did a search and found only 1 thread on the subject.
I took the 69 out for it's 3rd test run. When I got her back in the garage, I did a walk around looking for drips, leaks or other problems. I felt the rear diff cover and noticed it felt rather hot. I could touch it, but not for more than 10-15 seconds. I took my remote temp gun and it measured 143 degrees.
Is this normal, or should I open the cover and look into it further?
The left rear brake drum was a little warm also. The right side was cold.

Mine gets so hot I thought something was wrong inside. It's been a few thousand miles and so far everything is still fine. I couldn't touch mine for 5 seconds!
