How Long Do You Have For POR-15

I installed new full floors in my 69 Camaro. Then I wire wheeled the whole inside trunk and old floors area to bare metal. I then used the marine clean and metal ready and let them both dry .My Question is how long of a window do you have to treat it with the POR-15 paint? It’s been too hot to paint the last couple days and I’m waiting for a cooler day. Also now there is some surface rust appearing. Do I need to re-prep it?

I would say no, you do not need to re-prep it! But, I wouldn't wait too long - just because of the amount of rust that will show up.

You should be able to wait days before you put the POR on, if it wasn't for the rust.

Good luck,
Rob

Actually the rust will help promote adhesion. I'd be careful what you use if you wipre off rust. You don't want to contaminate the surface. A few days won't matter.

I agree with Rick on the time frame for the POR application. However it's been my experience that the cooler and more humid that it is outside dictates your cure time. I noticed that you mentioned that it was too hot to paint so you can expect a really slow cure time. (Full day to get tacky)

Best of luck and keep that stuff off yourself! (Or plan to wear it for a week) Also if you intend to spray through a gun make sure that you use a respirator or plan to get sick

Be careful and enjoy

Good point about humidity. On a dry day, it can take a day or so to dry. On a humid day, 3 hrs will have it ready to second coat. Amazing. Then there's temperature. Cold will slow it down.

Rick,
True if it's cold... But I'll bet there's nowhere in the US that it is so cool that it won't cure! I'll bet he has at least a day for it to cure before applying a second coat. I've been spraying in the early evenings (Just in time for the bugs to come up and get in the paint) and have been experiencing about 4-6 hours cure time between coats. Two thing you can do to speed things along is to put a humidifier in the area or... And I know this sounds wierd but is to get a spray bottle and mist over the painted area...! I did this on my subframe in the 67 and it really did help speed things up

Regards,
Tom

Yes, the timing is flexible. I've gone a day between coats with fine results. I think I read that they're second coated up to a few weeks between with good results although I personally don't want to test that theory. 40 degrees F. might be on the cool side!
