They work if you have a magnetic flat surface that is in the right plane on your wheels or hubs etc. Otherwise not too useful imho....

For accuracy you need a perfectly level floor. I use vinyl floor tiles to make sure all four wheels are on a level plane. It's also important that you have equal tire pressure in all four tires. I also make sure the front wheel bearings are adjusted correctly. Loose wheel bearings will give false readings. With the dust cap off the magnet attaches to the machined surface of the hub. If used properly the readings with this simple tool are very accurate and repeatable. I have been using one for over 40 years. The only problem I've had is the tool won't attach the hub with some aftermarket wheels. In this case I put some stock steel wheels on to do the alignment. Here is the one I use.
