Built th-350 with 2800-3200 stall, 10 bolt with eaton posi 373 gears. i need some opinions on heads. looking on going aluminum what should i pick edelbrock victor jr, dart pro1, or spend more and go with brodix? im looking for the biggest bang for the least amount of money.

I like the vortec design which out-flows the fast-burn chevy head.

Edelbrock makes a vortec copy (the E-Tec) -170cc port but I think they also make a bigger 200cc vortec. You'll have to run a vortec-style intake.

I would run the 170 cc head with an high-rise edelbrock air gap intake. The torque should be awesome.

so just want to be clear before i buy another set of heads. would you guys go with:

a) AFR# 1121 - 227cc , Angle Plug, 65cc,
b) Edelbrock victor jr # 77589 215cc, angle plug, 67cc,
c) Brodix Track 1 # 1001001A 221cc ANGLE PLU,G 67cc,

The car might see the track once a year. It's just a weekend toy

I'm of the opinion that ANY 400 SB needs at least 210cc heads. I had a mild 406 (280H cam) with older AFR-195's and she was basically done just over 5000 RPM. Traded for 210's and it really woke up the SB above 5000 RPM while losing absolutely nothing down low.

This and other R&D, have confirmed that 'smallish cam/big heads' is a great way to go. Misery is 'big cam/small heads'.

I just dyno'd one of the Dart 400" SHP engine kits with 10.8 compression and their 200cc as cast heads. It made 540HP with Darts dual plane air gap style intake and a 750 Holley. Then we used a Weiand Team G single plane and made 555HP. It was hanging on well past 6600-6700 rpm....cam I used peaked around 6300.

200cc is the least I'd run on one. Of those other choices the AFR 227's would get my nod!

For that tight converter I would run a set of AFR 195's no doubt. Im running a set of older AFR 195's and a much smaller cam and it runs killer. My converter is a 3200 as well. It goes 11.8's at 115 and has perfect street manners. I think the big heads and tight converter are a bad match.

A head around 220-230 with a decent csa (not 2"sq.) at the P-rod pinch.
Also a head that size will have a 2.08 to 2.125" int valve which will work well with the bigger bore. A small head will just go into choke early and start loosing power above peak tq. No reason a decent head (and intake)with your cam shouldnt make 550hp+/- and run high 10s

wayne,

It's always about budget and goals....better, more expensive heads will have you runnig quicker but how fast do you want to go? Is 10.90 worth $1,000 more that 11.0s?

What is your budget? What is your e.t. goal?

Highway Star, the pistons are -12cc dish and with a 64cc chamber it makes 10.89 to 1.

my goal is to have a fun weekend toy. I dont real care if it runs 10.90s or 11.00s as long as i dont get smoked by a honda or a 240. I really only wanted to spend $12-1400. but if spending $200 more will be a big difference than im in.

For your goal an AFR 195 would be fine. Sure the 227's are awesome, but they cost more to begin with and despite what they say, "standard" valvetrain does not work. Now you are into the cost of offset rockers and so on....

I hear a lot of good things about the ProFiler heads too and they are even cheaper I believe.

Get in touch with "Wolfplace" Mike Lewis (Lewis Racing Engines in California). He's on the Chevelles board a lot, but I don't know how much he hangs out here. He's a dealer for both and will give you an honest opinion on what's best for you. He also has some of the best prices I've seen anywhere and has built engines for several folks on that board and this!

I'm running Dart Pro-1 Platinum 200cc heads with 64cc chambers on my 406 at 10:5:1 compression and a hydraulic roller cam with 563/574lift. Pulls all the way through 6300 rpm. For the money , great heads jmo.

No need to go over board on AFR heads.
The 195's will do everything you want them to do, and do it better than the over sized heads. You are running a HYD Roller cam, so you have two limiters on RPM, the stroke and the Valvetrain. a 400 swinging at 6500 rpm MAX doesn't need 220's or 227's etc.
The 215's are an over kill too.
You still have to accelerate from 3000-6000 in first gear. That is where you make the most of your ET gains. The 6-1-HP difference in 2nd and 3rd won't show the gains that the Torque of launching does.
