Oil Filter Parts - What to Use?

My engine is a December 66 350. I have an oil filter canister and a bypass (5573842). I am not certain of the canister's ability to seal particularly around the bolt and the bypass has corrosion and pitting so I am not sure if it is useable. I don't mind having the canister but I need to fire this engine. So, I am guessing the easiest solution is to go to a spin on filter. If I do that what parts do I need to be able to attach an oil filter? Do I need a new bypass and a spin on adapter? If so, what part numbers? Thanks.

Pics of the oil bypass, note the corrosion on one side.

I would not use the existing bypass you have due to the pitting will not allow the filter to seal up.
Google SBC oil filter adapters and you will find two types: 1) with a bypass valve 2) without bypass valve.
The type without the bypass valve generally allows for reuse of your existing bypass or use of a filter with a built in bypass. So, you have to be careful and read the literature on each. Bottom line, know what you are buying.

In my opinion, the canister type oil filter is superior to any spin on as it the filtering element is about twice the size as the spin on. You can go to the salvage yard and buy the check valve for your 66 for probably $10 or less. I have 4 or 5 in my collection of parts, shame you are not closer.

Thanks for all the info. Here is a picture of my block where the filter mounts.

So, when it comes to just using the canister style, I can get a filter locally. I put some diesel into the canister to let it sit to clean it out and to see if anything leaks at the bolt head in the bottom. If it leaks, is there a way to replace the gasket on the bolt?

If I understand correctly:

For the canister, I need a new 5573842 adapter, a gasket for the 5573842 adapter to block, an o-ring for the top of the canister and the filter.

For the spin-on, I need Trans-Dapt #7201059 adapter but I will lose the bypass valve.

So, I ordered a new filter adapter replacement for the 5573842 and picked up a Wix filter with o-ring. I just cleaned out my canister. During the day it may have had a little leakage of the diesel that sat in it for cleaning from the bottom. Can you disassemble the canister easily and replace any kind of seal under the bolt head? If so, does anybody have the part number or where to get the seal if there is one?

Update: Still waiting for the adapter that I ordered from Davie's Corvette Parts. It was in stock when I ordered but then it said out of stock. They said it was expected in stock middle of last week. No joy. They are now saying first part of this week. Camaro Central was out of parts at the time I ordered and are still out of stock plus they were a little more expensive.
