What level should the fluid read on the dipstick when the car is on level ground and the engine cold?

Somewhere above the full mark, depending on the size of the converter and the location and volume of the external cooler, among other things.

I thought there was a line or dimple on the dipsticks at one point that you could fill it to when the car was cold and when the car was warm it would read full?

What is the definition of warmed up? After a good long drive or just idling on the drive way?

This is from a Trans am site:

This is from the factory Pontiac service manual in the turbo 350 transmission section: "with fluid at room temperature(65-85 degrees F), the level will be between the 2 dimples located below the "ADD" mark on the dipstick." So, it helps to know that when the car isn't warmed up yet.

And here is another little detail that many people probably didn't know(I didn't ) : "in checking the fluid, insert the dipstick in the filler tube with the markings toward the center of the car".

Looks like with the engine cold run shifter through the gears then put in park. Check the dipstick it should read @ add line or 1/4 inch below the add line. When the engine is hot after about 15 mile drive the fluid will have expanded and the fluid level will read about full or 1/4 below the full line.

Did not find anything about the direction of the dipstick.
