I believe my speedometer gauge needs rebuilt or replaced. IS this a difficult job? WHat would need to be removed in order to get the old one out?

It's been a lot of years since I had mine apart but I believe you can remove the bolts that secure the steering column to the dash, Just let it drop down, and remove all the screws around the instrument cluster. You'll still have wiring attached to the circuit boards. I also had my dash pad off but don't remember if that was necessary or not. Hopefully somebody that has done it more recently will chime in. Good luck.

The real trick for me was releasing the speedo cable. There's a clip around the cable behind the speedo that you have to push in to release the cable, then you can pull the dash out a little. To pull it out further, besides dropping the column, you'll have to disconnect the light switch from the dash as the wiring may be tight. To do this, there is a button on the side of the switch behind the dash that you push in to remove the switch knob, then you can unscrew the nut under the knob to unseat the switch. Good luck.

It's easy on a '69 to removed just the speedo. Unclip the speedo cable, then removed the 2 screws that hold the speedo to the cluster housing.(There's one on each side of where the speedocable attaches) Remove the lens cover from the front of the dash. 2 screws at the top and 2 screws on the bottom. Done

There are a few methods, squeezing under the dash is one, removing the driver seat then laying on the floor under the dash is another. Easier IMHO to remove the dashpad, then drop the steering column then the entire instrument dash carrier can be unscrewed, then you have comfort options including pulling the carrier forward to get to the cable clip and then the screws or take the whole cluster to a bench. Just depends on how much you like twisting your back. While you have the entire carrier out you can check other items that are impossible to get to behind so there are advantages and the speedo will be out for weeks being rebuilt and or repaired if you are keeping the original, might as well make the best of it and refresh the other items prone to issues such as heater control cables, defroster seals, vents etc.

Once you have removed it don't try to repair it yourself. Fine a specialty shop (GOOGLE) that has the correct tools and knowledge to make a diagnosis and if possible proper repairs. Speedo refurbishment is definitely not in the do it yourself category. Experience is the best teacher and I learned the hard way and destroyed a speedo that was most likely repairable. BEST WISHES.
