From 1969 model year up to 1972 you could not tell a SS from any of the VIN or Cowl tag date UNLESS the car was built in Canada. Oshawa stamped the RPO codes on the lower portion of the Cowl tag, Z15 or Z25 indicated a SS396 and SS454.

Starting in 1969 the SS was only an option not a distinct model as in prior years. Therefore the only way to determine the SS option is from the build sheet, P-O-P (warranty plate), or some other original documention that lists the the factory options. All the SS option equipment can be added to any car and it would be extremely difficult for even some experts to tell.
