... the car starts and runs fine.

what does this mean?
It means the starter is fine and your tune-up is good

Oh - and check the voltage at the gauge with a 'known' good voltmeter/VOM and see what it reads ;)

If you are running a stock charging system, replace your voltage regulator with an electronic one, they work better than the old points type regulator.
Wells VR715 is a good one. I don't think the old mechanical voltage regulators with buzzing contacts are good for modern electronics you may have in the car.

going to check all grounds this weekend.
as for the new regulator, the cr has the 250 6 cylinder. the only add on is a new electronic radio.

will the wells vr715 regulator work?

how do i tell what size alternator is on the car?

always something else and always learning.

The Wells regulator will work, plug and play.
Be sure you hook up the ground strap on the one mounting bolt as suggested earlier by Al.
You can find the alternator size by looking at the stamped numbers on the case behind the adjustment bolt. If you don't have A/C, P/seats, and P/windows, I wager its a 37 Amp alt. The Wells reg works with all rated alts regardless of capacity.

David's suggestion on the new Wells VR is a good one. In fact, the old black cap off your old regulator will bolt right over too if you are a stickler for having the original look. Plug and Play :D as Joe said. Its also a good time to check the wire ends and maybe polish the plugs a bit to remove any corrosion or aging. Here is my new one in place with the old cap on it.
