Washing Machine Spin Cycle Question

OK, First off I'd like to wish you all a very Happy Thanksgiving!

Now, with that said I'm having some washing machine problems. I have a Kenmore Series 70 washer that seems to agitate, wash and drain just fine and dandy. But what happens is that it seems that randomly, it's does not run the Spin part or the spin cycle. It will rinse and drain, but the clothes are still very wet (too wet to put in the dryer) and my wife or whoever is using the machine will need to run it through a "spin" again.

Like I said, it's odd that it works sometimes and not others. I was thinking about changing out the Timer/Dial setting mechanism, but the part is like a $140. So before I started to blindly swap out parts I figured I would check in here and hopefully one of my Camaro buddies has had more experience with this sort of thing then I.

A little less then a year ago my Kitchen Oven went and my wife wanted to go out and a new stove/oven. I was able to fix ours and it is still going just fine - saved big money there. About 6 months ago our gas clothes dryer went - wouldn't heat. Again she was in the market for a new Dryer. I was able to figure out the problem, order a few parts and got the dryer working again. Still going strong and another bullet dodged. So guess what she wants to do this weekend ... Yup, she wants to go looking for a new Washing Machine. Now that there is more Camaro parts if I can get this bad boy working as designed again! :)

Thanks in advance for any help.

The appliance parts stores are usually good about helping to diagnose problems. I don't mean going to Sears for Kenmore, but the the stores that sell parts for all makes.

Thanks Gary - Good idea. I ordered my other parts for my other appliance repair off ebay believe it or not.

How old is the washer ? Does it have a belt or is it a direct drive ?

The timer is very rarely the problem, but it does happen.
Tom - It's about 6 or 7 years old I would say. It's a Top Loader - direct drive machine. I believe it to be a Whirlpool Washer with a Kenmore name tag on it.

Check your belt if you have one...I can't remember if the Kenmore's have belt drive spin drives...If they do...I bet it spins fine with a light load...but when you do a load heavier with say Jeans in them, it doesn't spin...I bet recently someone might have overloaded the machine and when it tried to spin that heavy load it spun the belt...Put the machine on it's back and take a look at the belt and sheaves...I wouldn't be surprised if the belt was shiny and worn in one spot...Change the belt and maybe spray some belt dressing on it and you might be back in business... If it is a direct drive it has a rubber coupling...look under the washer for pieces of black rubber...this means the coupling is coming apart and needs replacing...The part should be able to get at an appliance store...Kenmore and Whirlpool have alot of the same parts.... good luck... :) MM

direct drive machine.
Check the motor windings see if ther has been any splashing onto the windings...corroding the winding insulation.
Check for any dirty or corroded wire terminals.

Rob I've had this happen on my Maytag and on my current washer. Most machines nowdays have a thermal protection device to protect the motor from pulling excessive current if you happen to overload it. What will happen is during the spin cycle the thermal protection opens and the motor stops spinning, the pump may still operate and pump the water from the machine. The timer continue to count down to the end of the cycle and what you end up with is wet clothes but everything else appears to be normal. Unbalanced or heavy loads can cause this. Generally after 30 minutes or so the thermal protection device cools off and the contacts make allowing the motor to spin again.

If you've had unbalanced loads or heavy loads this may well be normal for the device to protect the motor.

Likely thrashed basket drive/clutch assembly. Enjoy your holiday time for a new washer!

I've had good luck on appliance forums with ideas to fix mine (jake has some knowledgeable posts as I recall). I replaced the drive coupler on my whirlpool about 6 times and probably 3 water pumps over about 9 years (thats how old my kid is- new kid= new washer). Had the clunking problem at spin (which is next) which was likely a tranny spin shaft broken gear according to a forum. Caused by worn brake...New tranny $140. Bought a new high efficiency washer...$200 rebate.

I read about the clutch and brake assembly ($150?) posted above at same time. Doesn't look like a lot of fun to replace and fairly expensive. From what I read when its toast the tranny and other components are close to end of life as well...

Transmission is shot.
Even if you still have a warranty covering parts, the labor will exceed the cost of a new machine.
Time to go shopping.
Ask me how I know!

Here's something simple to try. Check the lid switch that shuts off the spin when you open it. It happened to mine, to check it out I just wired around the switch. Once I did that it started working fine. The timer still runs even though the lid is up, so if the switch is bad, no spin cycle.

You've managed to save the last couple of appliance emrgencies.....that's a great $$$ saver. But remember, appliances make wonderful gifts for that special someone. A nice new washer says "I love you" almost daily throughout the year. Whenever you throw a pile of dirty clothes on the floor you are reinforcing that love !
buzz

p.s....and don't forget how a new set of tires under the tree covers up that nasty pine scent with the aroma of rubber. Make it a christmas you will never be able to forget.

Happy Holidays everyone.

I have the LG front door machine. I am having the same problem also. Have a warranty and all the guy does is drain the tank and tells the wife its the pump and motor. Be out in 10 days to repair. Gotta order parts. Plus tells her it will be thursday. She says thursday is thanksgiving,, so it will be friday. Parts are at the house now.

He did not take anything apart. Maybe he has ran across this problem before.

The problem is we did not use HE washing soap. To many suds for the pump. This is only on front loader machines.

So if you have a front loader machine make sure you use the right soap. Oh yea it is in the manual,,, who reads manuals,,, not us camaro guys,,,we dont need no manual.

Most Kenmore top load clothes washers are built by Whirlpool. If it is less than 10 years old, it would be a direct drive model and not have a belt. The lid switch is a good possibility. Also if the washer is overloaded it may not reach its full spin speed and clothes come out wet.

Try this link. Hover the cursor over the motor transmission and click. There is a coupler between the motor and transmission. If the coupler was shot, you wouldn't get any agitation or anything. I vote for the bad lid high spin safety switch. You probably have to pop the top off to get to it.

To pop the top, you need to insert a putty knife in the joint between the top and the face and shove in to release the clips. YOu kinda have to search for them. There is one on the left and one on the right.

This link goes for 3 pages, keep hitting "next page"

Tell me the web isn't the best thing since the Z28 Camaro? If you can swap out an alternator or water pump, you can fix a washing machine. Just make sure the silly thing is unplugged and the water is shut off to it.

Rob , I have a Whirlpool that does the exact same thing and I have chased my tail trying to diagnose the problem , but I can't pinpoint it .

A couple of thngs to consider
1. The drain cycle follows the agitate time in both the wash and rinse cycle . This drain cycle is a full 2 minutes long and only the pump is running .
2. After the 2 minutes , the spin cycle starts with a clunk , there will be a short rinse water application along with the tub spinning AND the pump on .
3. This is where I had the problem , the spin portion of the cycle would not start evidenced by the clunk not sounding . I could open and close the lid once maybe twice and the spin would start with the clunk .

The kicker with this whole thing is that it would happen randomly . I did change a plastic part inside the agitator but I don't think it had anything to do with the spin problem . I wish that I could tell you exactly what my problem was but I can't and the problem hasn't reoccured in a couple of months .

I would definately check the lid switch out , either by opening and closing the lid while in the spin cycle or bypassing it completely .

I hope this helps in some way :D
