Will a center console fit in a 67?

I have a 67 4 speed. I love the center console look. Last year I had called Rick's and he told me he couldn't guarantee the console would fit & line up with the shifter. He was asking if the car was ever an auto.

As a rule of thumb, do they fit?

Thanks!

If you buy a factory style 67 console for it and the shifter is factory or has the correct mounting for a 67 it will fit. But if you are doing after market or your not running a factory shifter or a universal mount for an aftermarket shifter you may need to do some work to get it right.

A 67 console should fit a 67 whether it was originally a 4spd or an auto that was converted to 4spd if using a Muncie. The shifter hole in a 67 body is the same for auto and manual.

My car was a factory PG with floor shift and console. First thing I did after buying the car was swap in a M20, just needed a few pieces to convert the auto cover plate to the 4spd one.

Well it sounds like you are running factory Muncie 4 speed shifter so if the transmission hole is original or was replaced to factory specs, then nothing is required except installing the bracket that the console mounts to.

If the transmission tunnel was replaced and the hole cut in a non factory location and the shifter is not using factory mounts - neither sound like the case by your description but for the sake of posting an answer - then the hole would need to be moved to the correct location, and the shifter mounted as per factory.

It means it wasn't a manual or floor shift vehicle from the factory or a generic floor pan or generic trans tunnel was installed some time after she was born. In either case you don't need the ring. They stopped doing it for 68 and 69's. All that matters is that the hole is in the right place. ;)

Not necessarily. If the hole is in the correct place and you have brackets that put the shifter in the right location you will be fine. You can change the hole too. I had a 3-speed car and closed up the hole and converted it to an auto. Easy stuff.

I can't tell if its the picture angle but that driver's seat looks out of place, is it stock? It looks like the seat position is preventing the console to be centered over the transmission tunnel. Can you provide a picture looking down the tunnel from the back seat. The cutout should be almost centered between the front seats, but closer to the dash, almost at knee position. Cheers, fred

It's and new seat cover and cushion I believe, on the original seat frame that was reconditioned.
The cutout definitely is NOT centered on the tunnel. It is to the left side...
The center of the shifter boot is 2.5" to the left of center of the tunnel for some reason.

You say you have a 4 speed transmission is it a Muncie or a Saginaw? It doesn't matter because a Muncie shifter was used on both. If you have a Hurst shifter then that means it has been changed. This is the reason you didn't have a console already installed. If you decoded the tag on the firewall did the car come with a console? How about a picture of your shifter mounted to your transmission? So you need to Identify the type of transmission you have. Then get the correct Hurst shifter to fit the console.

I bought the car restored. The previous owner said it's a refreshed Muncie and a Hurst shifter.
I have a thread where I posted the tag info. The respondents made no mention of a console, so I'm assuming the car didn't have one originally.
As the early posters here alluded to the fact that I might be ok to fit a console, I went for it.
The hole seems to be too far left along with the shifter. That's why the console looks crooked in the pic. It fits between the seats fine.
Why would the restorer buy the incorrect shifter and have to move the shifter hole to the left, when he could have bought the right shifter and not touched the hole? Seems like a bad choice.
Does anyone know if Hurst makes the correct shifter (part #?) that would fall in the middle of the tunnel? Then I can have the hole opened more towards the center and use the console.

My 67 was a column mount auto when I bought it. I then moved it to a floor shift and had to cut the hole for the auto shifter so it would line up correctly with the console that I got also. Didnt have internet back then so I measured the hole from the donor car so it would be exactly like factory. I cut it so that the console would be in the right place to match up with the factory plates that had the PRNDL on it. Later I switched to a saginaw 4 speed. I bought the correct Hurst shifter and mounting kit for the car. It all lined up perfectly. I later switched to a muncie and I had to buy a different mounting kit with different selecting rods but used the same shifter. It all lines up perfect like factory. The short version is that you can buy the correct shifter and mounting kit from hurst to make it all line up perfectly. I dont know the part numbers. There are other threads about this that list the part numbers. Do a search. I dont know why the PO installed the shifter like that. Maybe he was using parts he had laying around.

With a lot of help from the guys here. I had an original console and floor shift automatic. Both long gone when I bought the car. It had a cable shift B@M shifter a foot behind where the original shifter sat. With the search function here and help from members here who told me to look for the original shifter hole. If it was there then the horseshoe bracket holes should be there. It was and they were. I was able to install my repop shifter and console in no time flat. Wiring plugged right in also,
