So, what do you think she's worth? The owner is asking $29k.

Thanks in advance for your responses.

More Info...

I called the seller a few days ago and was told a guy in New York had committed to buying it. I got an email today saying the car is still for sale as the guy in New York was having trouble coming up with the $28k price they'd agreed upon. I called him tonight and this is what I now know.

The guy spent 7 years on the restoration and was a GM tech (moved up the food chain and since retired) and had full use of the shop. He said he replaced every nut and bolt. He has photos of the restoration. He bought the car complete from the original owner (owner's son...original owner had passed away; has original Ohio title and keys) with 61k original miles. Clues are there that it was an SS but since he cannot document it; he's not advertising it as such. Car has a '69 350 in it as the original block had a crack in it; discovered when he tore it down for rebuild.

He had the sub frame and rear-end acid dipped and then powder coated GM black. The body was stripped down to bare metal, quarters and wheel houses replaced, rockers were perfect. Both floor pans were replaced as was the trunk...shock towers perfect. The underside was epoxy coated GM black. It's been 3 years since the car has been completed.

He said he'd let it go for $27k. Do you guys think this is a fair price or are there better cars/deals to be had?

when you consider what it takes to build a car weather it is an ss or a plain jane 27k is nothing. it is hard to find a project car under 7500 these days. Plain jane or not what do you want to do with the car, is it a driver or an investment. I have bought many new cars for well over 30k to drive for a few years then sale or trade in for half the purchase price.

Very nicely done, and seems as though the owner is a stand up guy. 27K is a fair price imo.

Way too much money for that car...20-22k maybe...it is nice, sits way to high though and the wheel of the chevette has to go...

I agree with most others here, ...25-30K seems very reasonable for that car. If the car looks anything like the pics, ...I don't think you can go wrong at all. Additionally, he seems like a stand-up guy, ...NOT advertising it as an SS (even when it could be). Yes, it sits a tad high, ...the wheel is not original, etc., ...but it's not a restoration, ...it's a very nicely done 'hot rod', ...meant to be driven. (Personally, ...I really like the look of that car.)
You're obviously looking at the car, ...I'd say make a trip (with cash in hand) to see it. If it looks anything like the pics, ...and he's got photos of the resto, ...I'll think you'll be driving it home then.
You surely could not build it for that money...

Keep us posted

My opinion-go up and look at the car(with 25k in your pocket),make sure he knows you are a serious cash buyer and you are ready to buy on the spot if you like it. And if he's serious about selling you will probably be driving it home for 25k.
Cash money almost always makes people re-think their bottom line.
Good luck!!

Everything looks great but 1 thing I personally would be concerned with. The upper dash panel HASN'T been replaced and to me that is reason to suspect that its been patched over like this car. Also imho, hard to believe a car with only 62,000 miles would need such a resto job.

not if it's been in salt country & 40+ yrs old it isnt hard at all to believe. 1 trip to the local supermarmarket would of done the trick

I have not asked about the cowl area yet, thanks for reminding me, but I was told the quarters were replaced due to bumps/dents on them and not due to rust. Apparently, there were some decent creases in the edges of both quarter panels along with some dents. The guy said he'd rather replace the quarters than have the bondo. The car, according to the seller, was in good overall condition. The areas that were repaired due to rust issues were patches to the floor pans that were done by cutting out patches of replacement pans. I'll have to check whether the outer wheel houses were replaced due to rust or what. I know some say you might as well replace them while you are there. The subframe and frame were unmolested with no evidence of the car ever being hit...at least hard enough to cause that type of damage. When he bought it, the original lacquer (rally green) was still on the car.

The photos he has of the restoration are not extensive...something like 12-15 photos. He has lots and lots of receipts from Rick's, though. The car could get bought out from underneath me, but I cannot help that. I'm not going to buy a car I cannot test drive and, at least next weekend, the weather will be far too nasty for a test drive.
