Well i had an LS-6 and dropped it in my 68 RS, ran 11:16 spinning the 10" slicks, spun the tires off the line and then again when i hit 2nd. I had a hi rise dual quad intake and 4:56 gears. I can honestly say the car was scary fast. This was around 1990 so i was 23. I often wonder how much power that engine made. I really think it was over 500 from my experience.

If i can find the time slip for top mph maybe someone can do the math. I seem to remember 123 MPH but not sure.
Here you go..........

Everybody is beating a dead horse ..................ls6 wins this topic (title says stock chevy engine)

Bill, he wanted real HP at the crank, not the factory rating. For that, it's L88. Same as ZL1 but with less heat loss.
Didn't the ZL-1 come with a more agressive cam compared to L-88? ZL-1's also had open chamber heads, where only late L-88's did. Early L-88's had closed chamber heads, same as L-79.

ZL-1 ...............some more good reading...........

Say What ya' want the ZL-1 is a Bad Unit !!!!! Stock or Modified !!!

I agree about the 427 Zl-1. Thanks for the link!! Great reading!

If we are talking factory mass produced engine it would be the 454 LS6
If we are talking factory race only engine it would be the 427 ZL-1 that would smoke them all.

Pdq brings up a great point about the 454 LS7 that was supposed to go into the 1970 SS Camaro but never did. I still think the ZL-1 eats em all and the 1/4 mile times of the 1969 ZL-1 Camaro, 1969 ZL-1 Corvette prove it.

But look out for the 2009 ZR-1 Corvette!! Has that thing been tested yet??

The most powerful I heard of was the 1970 Camaro SS with the 454 LS-6 Option as well. As far as my knowledge went it was the most powerful production car made. It ran out of gear pretty quick I heard though.

Just kinda curious about your opinions.

Which engine do you think was the most powerful that Chevrolet built in the musclecar era? Pre 1973. Not talking about what they were factory rated at....I mean which one had the most juice at the crank?

The LS-6? ZL-1? L-88? L-89? Or something else.

Thought this might be interesting.
No question, hands down, the ZL-1. Bigger cam then the L-88, the LS-6 is a street motor with a street cam, same goes for the L-72. The ZL-1 cam is 262/273 duration @.050"! full floating 12:1 forged pistons, 7/16" Boron rod bolts, 5140 nitrided, cross drilled crank, GM Holley 850 double pumper carb, transisterized ignition. All racing parts in a racing motor that was still Fed certified for street use and with warranty. Mine dynoed at 567hp. at the crank with stock manifolds and smog.

The still born LS7 of old that should be right at 600hp and then next, the 430hp/L-88 and ZL1 at probably 540 hp or so w/ no more than headers on all these engines so they could breath up top!

My brothet bought an LS7 crate engine about 1971 or so as I remember. He put it in his 1968 C10 then a flat bottom. What a hoot.

It has to be the LS6. I cant imagine that there is any Chevy stock enging ever built, that is more brutal than the LS6 of 1970. The engine was only optinal from late 1969 until May 1971. 1971 LS6 was rated 425 hp. 1970 was rated 450 hp @ 5600 rpm
Rated torque 500 lb-feet @ 3600 rpm
Compression ratio : 11,25:1
In my opinion it is the torque of +500 lb-feet that make the car to the beast it is. Its just awsome.....
