I had a friend call wanting to sell his 70 Rally Sport z28, he has been out of work for the last 6 months and is ready to let it go..
WHATS IT WORTH ? ? ?

1970 RS Z28 , LT1 350 , correct valve covers , air cleaner , fuel lines, holley carb, intake manifold , 186 heads. It has ceramic coat headers that look great. Engine comp. is detailed very stock except for the headers.
Super nice Black standard interior , console , correct steering wheel with small "rs" and woodgrain. Factory tach and gauges, 6500 rpm tach . It Needs a dash pad..curled at the front.
Muncie 4-speed M-21 and 12 bolt posi with 3.73 gears. Correct wheels with nice BFG's.
Short rear spoiler , front spoiler , No power steering .
Dont think its numbers matching but have not checked yet, so lets assume its not and if it is its a bonus..
Original correct color CITRUS GREEN w. black stripes.
Oh, and has Z.28.19 on trim tag.
Other than the Dash pad car needs nothing.. Its done and ready to go. And its a split bumper car with urethane nose.

What do you offer and still keep it friendly ? ? ?

Tough call...But in negotiations, try and have him at least set the desired price and work from there. If you come in too low (for him), you may just be insulting him or looking like a friend who's trying to take advantage of him.

If you insist on a price and want to do something "low but reasonable", why not check the closed/sold listings on Ebay to get an idea of today's approximate values?...which will undoubtedly be lower than any price guide or dealer, or Hemmings listings, etc.

I did a quick look and there was one that recently sold for about $15,600 and another that went for $18600, which also happened to be a Z28 RS in Citrus Green.

Obviously numbers matching versus not is a big deal. I see clean tribute cars going for $10K, so figure somewhere in between for non-numbers match, but original perhaps?

There were 8,733 70Z’s made say 1/5 were RS’s = 1,750. The RS Option really isn’t that much of a factor with the 70 to 73 models as most enthusiasts really don’t care; however, the 70Z is much rarer then any of 1st GEN Z's simply as indicated by the # of them made and just as Popular.

An original #’s matching 70Z with Carb, Intake, Breather is extremely rare to have survived for almost 40 years as, like mine, most survivors were converted to BBC power and the original engine lost.

If the Body has NO RUST without major Dings it’s a BIG Plus for Value. I think to determine the Value of the car both you and your Buddy have to sit down and do some research because it’s worth just as much as a #'s matching 69Z in comparable condition. Some questions you should consider; is - What is the History of the Car? When did your Buddy purchase the Z and for how much?

It’s SAD but the economy reflects the Value of our Classics, anyone with a Job today will simply purchase the New Camaro and grab our Classics at a Bargain from those feeling the weight of this depression.

If you have read any Car Magazines, reviews proclaim the 70Z to be the BEST Z Chev ever built, although the 69Z remains the Most Popular. Because of the delay with the introduction the 70 Camaro and prolonged production of the 69 models, Chev Dealers sold both models as New Cars in the 1st quarter of 1970 - A very interesting Year in the History of the Camaro.

I absolutely love the 70Z, but werent there only 602 67 Z28's made? I think the 67 is the rarest with the least numbers made. Regardless, the 70 Z28 with RS is a rare one!

Thanks for correcting me Guy's. My intention was to compare the number of 70Z's made to the Popular 69Z and that is something like 8,733 to 19,014. It's not that I have anything against Winged Models because I wish they were all Winged - LOL

I can add that the 70 Camaro other then Body Design and the more powerful 350LT1 is more closely related to the 1st GEN then later Models; forinstance, same drive train, electrics, steering column, ball joints from a 69 Chevelle ... etc

With todays economic state it's difficult to pin a price on our cars but I would argue that a #'s matching 70Z is not worth any less then a #'s matching 69Z in comparable condition.

Considering the #'s of Z's made between 67 and 74, it is wonder that any #'s Matching Cars have survived. After 40 years, the majority of Z's have been throughly flooged, modified or wrecked during it's Racing Career.

Real #'s matching 70 Z's are very hard to come by. 69's are still worth more, even though they took a big hit.

70 Z's though have held up well, and still go for 25k > for a nice driver car.

The real steal is the 70 Camaro L78. When you can find one, they sell for great prices.

Is the car I see on eBay that your talking about?

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/Chevrolet-Camaro-Z-28-Real-1970-Z-28-Camaro-Freshly-Restored-Citrus-Green_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2ec0Q2em14QQhashZitem2a004330c5QQitemZ180393029829QQptZUSQ5fCarsQ5fTrucks

Norwood Car, Muncie with no Pollution Devices that's a PLUS.

Rear Bumperettes missing and do I see Blue on one of the Wheel Hats, no Speedo Cable, looks like a 400 Breather and the Dash Pad looks a little beaten. No Big Deal if it's real # matching Z with fresh Motor and Good Body and definitely worth to refine the restoration - I'm not an RS Fan for these cars - Nice Car - No matter what.

For being an RS you would have thought it would have had PS, Hide-A-Way Wipers and perhaps a Console. The F3 SoftRay Tint Glass is nice. The front Buckets and Consoles in the 70 were crap anyway and would sooner put in more comfortable seats and extinguisher and as for the Rear Deck, use the Floor Rug Material over 1/4" Marine Plywood and you will never be nagged with speakers rattling or it warping ;o)

Its got the wrong rear spoiler on it, shouldnt it have the low spoiler on a 70?? Yes! It does have the correct low back seats in it.. Shes a 15k-21k car..depending on how nice it really is? I see flaws that affect the value of it..good luck to you!

Correct, the taller 3 piece wasn't STD Z equipment until 71 but was available from April of 70 as an over the counter option or via Special Order hence the controversy COPO identity which applied to Trans AM Racing and nothing to do with say a Performance item such as the ZL1. The 3 piece COPO Spoiler on the 70Z is therefore accepted as a matter for preference over the Single Low Piece Spoiler and does not devalue the car, similarly the matter for preference of the STD Grill over the RS Grill does not make the 70Z less valuable. Then again the LT1 Hood is not OEM but as Camaro enthusiasts we accept it as one of numerous modifications which has made the Camaro the Classic it always will be.

I would say that car should easily fetch over 20K and would be worth twice the amount if it were not for the state of our economy, anything under would be a great investment for the future. ToDay, I don't believe any of our rides are worth any more then 1/2 of what they were in the past - Lets hope times change. Don't let the Mopar and Ford Boys GOAT you, they are in the same BOAT.

Guess we'll find out after the Bidding - Anyone up for a POOL - LOL

IMO, That (the ebay car) was a smoking deal on that car at 17k if the engine was indeed original to that car.

All of the small things and even the spoiler can be easily fixed.

Hey Guys , the car on ebay is not the car i am looking at.. And i really dont like the big cowl hood on that car.
The car i am looking at is all stock looking. Went to look at it yesterday and its super nice but the owner is asking $25k . as i think he paid $32k for it five years ago.
Think i am going to tell him i am going to pass and see if that changes?
Thanks everyone for all the comments and help with a current market value.

The ebay car has nice curb appeal. Print out the auction, in color, and show it to him. If you can pick it up for 20-22k, and it's numbers matching, then i'd say that it would still be a deal. I don't think you would lose money.

I think part of what hurt the ebay Z was the early morning ending time. To be honest, I was watching that car and was going to bid 18 on it as an investment, and did'nt get up early enough! :)

Rich , bummer you missed on that car .. I hate when it sells for less than i would have bid.
Looking at past auctions for 70 Camaro's i see that car sold in July for $18,687.
I didnt look at his feedback, but maybe he will have better luck with this buyer ?
I Love 70 Z28's and having the split bumper is like having Hidden Headlights on a first generation car , always my preference.
