What brand of primer and color coat did you use? Project looks great.

Tu

Thanks! We used all PPG paint. Here is a list of it all and the numbers.

PPG Black Primer- DP90LF
PPG High Build Primer- K36
Slick Sand
PPG Black Base- DBC9700

The body should be based and cleared this weekend.:hurray:

The trunk lock has been all welded up. Has anyone else done this? What kit did you use? We got the SPAL shaved door handles kit for the doors, and they sell a "trunk release kit" for $24. Other companies such as Modo innovations sells a trunk release kit for about $180. There kit has a new whole new locking mechanism where as the cheap SPAL kit just has a solenoid, I need to know if the anyone has gotten the SPAL one to work on there camaro.

Here is the Modo trunk release kit.

As far as the Modo Innovations' kit goes, it is a complete bolt in kit with no modifications needed. It includes everything needed to install it except the tools and the time to install it. The kit includes a new modified trunk latch catch that is zinc plated to match the latch...no chipped paint after the first use.
I can supply a simple sketch for a cable pull set up for guys who have shaved their key lock in case you lose battery power and need access to the trunk. Mike at Musclerodz sells these kits and is a sponsor on this site.

Nice build by the way.

Thanks shannon! Havent had an update in a while. 95% has been painted. Only thing left is inside, and a couple of little parts.

Here is a little "refurbishing" job we did on the taillights. There 67' taillights. We liked the look alot more than the 68's. The lenses has little cracks, but it was real cheap!

Cleaned the back/front of this real good, then primed it with our water based primer.

We painted the inside with a silver spray can, to hopefully make it a little bighter. Should reflect better than the orginal.

Smoked the lenses, with VHT Transparent paint then cleared them. Heres a comparing shot.
Image

We painted the outer bezel with our PPG black/PPG clear.

Heres the finished product! The picture just doesn't do any justice on how good it looks.

Thanks and hopefully we will have pictures of the painted car, after all the sanding/buffing.

The last couple of weeks have been slow.:( Just a little bit of buffing a day. But we got some things for the motor to finish it off before going in. We got the MSD distributor installed and the mounting brackets on.

Another small change in plans, instead of keeping the th400 transmission were going to sell it because we got a H.D 700r4, that was rebuilt and built to handle 650hp. It also came with a 2400 stall converter.

short story: the guy we bought the trans from had just bought a roller race car from some other state sight unseen, and he was telling us how excited he was and how he got his garage all ready for it to start installing the finishing parts. He said it was an average deal, no crazy good deal or anything. So the money was sent to the seller already, and he had a shipping company pick it up, well the shipping company called and said the address was an empty sand lot.

moral: if you make a purchase like that go through ebay, and there are a lot of scammers out there!

Got the motor and transmission in today. :hurray: We also put some of the FATMAT rattle-trap on the floors inside. Still have to do the doors, trunk and firewall. Whoever gets the honor to restore this car in future years, isn't gonna have a fun time replacing floorboards.:D Also we got all the door hinges painted in POR-15 black cote, so hopefully once we get the doors insulated with fatmat they can go on. Prior to the engine install we ended up doing another spray of POR-15 black cote on the sub-frame, to gloss it up a little.

Well here is a picture of before and a picture now.

Build update, after 2 years and 3 months she is 99% done. We did everything in our garage, except for the media blast, which was a waste of time and money. Couple things are left, like 3 inch lowering springs for the back, change the gearing and a few odds and ends. But it is road ready the way it is. This was our first attempt at doing anything remotely like this. Couple things I would do differently if I had it to do over. Every thing custom we did to her came from reading about it here on the forum such as, smoothing everything we could, door handles, locks, firewall, front fender ends, front valance, cowl, molding in the rear spoiler, placing the windshield wiper motor behind the firewall, etc.etc. The forum offered incredible information. Anything we thought of some one else had already done it and written about it. The only thing we did by our own design was the front grill. We used metal screen and molded it into the old grill after cutting out the center piece. We wanted a deep black hole effect to look like nothing is there. Couple things I learned along the way: what smoothing meant, how to weld, how to paint, how to block sand, 12 new cuss words, reproduction pieces don't fit, a good paint gun is worth the money, there is always a bigger hammer when it doesn't fit right. Thanks for the wealth of information you guys have contributed over the years for novices like ourselves to learn from.

Wow awesome car. I freaking love the black. Was your car originally a Canadian car? What motor are you running?
Don't think it was a Canadian car. We put a 383 stroker with a 700 R4 transmission in her.

That was the novice in me. Well we worked almost nightly and weekends for over 2 years. It is a whole different story when you do everything yourself. Thanks again for the compliment. You going to Turkey Rod Run this weekend? Good time to pick up needed parts.
