just picked up a new addition to the fleet. I was fortunate enough to catch my white whale yesterday. a car that was extremely influential to me that i have known all my adult life became available for purchase and i bought it right then and there.
this car was owned & built by my late step father in-law...if that makes sense. my wifes mothers husband who was 10 years younger than my mother in law and 10 years older than me. he was a gear head from birth from a gear head family and he and i were more friends than anything. my wife and i have been together since we were 17 (50 now), so i was mentored, influenced and taught how to work on these cars by the owner / builder of this beautiful ride, Jeff Rhodes.
Jeff passed away in 2008 and my mother in-law held on to the car for a few years. when she first thought of selling she asked me to reach out to his brother Ron to offer him the car. At the time Ron wasn't able to take it on and the wife & I weren't either. so the car sat for another couple years.
one day in 2015 the wife and i stop by to visit and the cars gone. mother in-law says "oh, i sold it to your cousin". our jaws hit the floor. at this point had we known she was ready to sell we certainly could have bought it. i reached out to the cousin and said if you ever decide to sell please give a call first.
that call came yesterday. i called the brother Ron first to give him first right of refusal and after a conversation it was decided that i should buy it. with zero hesitation i told him I'll pick it up this evening....now its in it's forever home.
there are a few bugs to work out from 20 years of non-builder ownership but all in all it is the same car and absolutely gorgeous.
