Hello everyone hope someone could help me out I just purchased a 396 engine to put in my 67 Camaro. I just don’t know what are the specs or what car did it come out of. The man said it’s from a 69 Camaro but wasn’t sure. And now I’m debating either fixed this one or continue working my 350 with Holley efi sniper. Note this Camaro I’m building is a cruiser but want to make more than 400hp. Hope someone could help to identify the engine specs . Thanks

With the changes needed to convert the BBC it would be much easier for stay SBC. A 383 400 HP is an easy build.

plus you save the added weight of the BBC and no worries about needing to change the front springs.

Stroker small block all the way.

Just price up the right pistons and heads for the big block and add in for all the accessories, mounts, pulleys you need to do the swap....The $$$ 396 big block looses fast.

LS motor swap starts to look good after that exercise.

383 is cheap when you look at the numbers.

A 355 will get you 400+ hp and TQ with a fairly mild cam and a set of modern heads, at least mine is per dyno sheet. 383 even more.

OP, consider cost against building your current 350 and a long block from BPE. You likely will be $ ahead on the later and have a 1 piece RMS, full hydraulic roller cam, 4 bolt main motor with modern AL heads.....and a 50k mi warranty.

Transfer your current accessories, intake, carb (600cfm min), dizzy to the crate motor

My 1970 402 has that block casting number, the casting date code will be on the opposite side of the block. You may want to post a pic of that. Not sure if they changed the block casting number when Chevrolet went from the 396 to 402. I think it's a TKB because they didn't use "I". It's your car so do what you want to do. If I had to do it all over again, I would not have gone down the big block road. It's heavier, everything is more expensive and you can build (or just buy!) a small block that makes just as much, if not more, power. There is the "cool" factor but that is ENTIRELY subjective.
