I'm looking for a direct ready made console to fit with my T56/Hurst shifter. Not looking for any custom made,or console modifications.

I didn't install my 6speed T56 Magnum, a shop did that. All i know is that the shifter has moved back, from where it was when I had the 4speed Muncie previously.

My question is:

1) How can I really find out if my shifter is relocated somewhere not fitting a classic console?

2) What consoles would fit directly? (please share product link)

3) If my shifter is relocated, either of those below what I need? Anything else?(please share product link)

a) https://www.summitracing.com/parts/huu-3913004/overview/year/1968/make/chevrolet/model/camaro - if this is the one, can't I just get the black plate, since I already have a hurst shifter?
b)https://americanpowertrain.com/shop/fields/make-model/white-lightning-shifter-mechanism-magnum-t-56/

3) Off topic: Sorry, I can't tell, is this actually a Tremec T56 Magnum?

Thank you!

You have a Hurst Shifter shaft. That doesn’t mean you have a Hurst shifter. Shaft can be bolted to any shifter.

Not sure about the transmission. Could be a OEM LS T56.

What is the OD ratio in 6th? Drive at 60-70 mph in 4th. Note RPM. Shift to 6th without changing speed and note rpm. If RPM drops 50% it’s a OEM transmission. If it drops 20-30% it’s an aftermarket T56. If aftermarket it does not look like a magnum to me but it’s hard to tell from the picture.

I see, so then with this shaft & it’s location, what direct fit consoles can I get?

For the OD ratio, ill test it out to find out

OP

you have a LSx/T56 swap, right?

It looks like you have a donor LSx T56, not a "Magnum" T56. IDK if HURST makes a "Blackjack" (offset) shifter for your T56. There may be a aftermarket kit to relocate the shift handle itself forward using a bracket

The Magnum T56 has a 6 hole mount for the shifter so the Blackjack you link will work on that. The T56 you have has 4 holes to mount the shifter

Doing the 6th gear ratio test and or read the yellow sticker as Vega$$ notes will tell you which one you have but from your pic it looks like a OEM LSx T56

#9 ·
yeah IDK what the "yellow" sticker says as my T56 has a orange one (Dex 3) in another car

I have seen aftermarket shifters that do move the handle forward, just don't know if there is one for the Tremac LSx T56

I see several kits for the "magnum" T56 but a deeper search may show something for a LSx T56

That's definitely a donor trans...

The F-body transmissions have a .5:1 OD ratio.

The GTO & CTS-V is .56:1 with also a 2.97 1st instead of the normal 2.66.
These also have the shifter mounted farther rearward on a bracket behind the 4 bolt transmission flange so they are easy to identify.

Definitely? You mean about mine in the photo, a T56 donor, not magnum..

What if I get these full TMI sport console, they don’t come precut so that means i can custom cut the shifter location without having to relocate, right?

OP, I have that center console installed in my car. What measurements do you need? That center console DOES have a cut out in it already. The console is made out of fiberglass. They cut out the fiberglass where a stock shifter would go and then wrap the vinyl over the hole. You would have to cut out more fiberglass and somehow reinforce the area where the glass is cut out underneath otherwise whenever you set anything on the console the only thing supporting it would be the vinyl. Also the console has no fasteners attached to it whatsoever. I fabricated brackets onto the bottom of it using aluminum and JB weld and was able to bolt it to the existing holes in the floor for the original console. The good part is you'd be able to slide the console wherever you wanted and then fabricate the brackets to work in that location.

Only thing is that your shifter is so far back, it might need to go where the drink holders are. If you can get one without the drink holders, you are golden to put it wherever you need to.

OP

IMHO the cleanest option so you could then use a stock console is the link Vega$69 posted

https://shiftsst.com/t56-front-shift-kit.html

The new position "may" not be where the stock floorboard hole is so its possible that needs to be adjusted and if so you could then just slide a stock console forward/back slightly as needed and mount in that position

If you are comfortable with the shifter that far back (for me it would be to far back) than a donor console from some other car that you like the appearance of could be used but would likely require some "adjustments"

The consensus is you have a LSx donor trans not a Magnum. If you can see the bolt pattern of your shifter base under your boot and its 4 bolt, not 6, than you do not have a Magnum T56

If you do wind up going with the kit from Silverstar you will need to pull tranny and put some Sheetmetal back over the tunnel hole that was made for its current position. Might want to contact Silverstar and ask if their kit places the shifter where the stock Camaro position is

Your current shift arm would bolt to the Silverstar base..unless it comes with one. Not seeing it in the pic of their kit

Sorry newbie here, so id have to take off the carpeting to look under the boot? or maybe i dint understand.. what exactly should i be looking for to confirm my trans type?
You would need to remove the rubber boot and likely pull the carpet back enough to see the shifter base on top of your tranny. If the shifter base is held on with 4 bolts you DO NOT have a Magnum T56. If it has 6 bolts you do.

Given you prefer the shifter in its current location you should have a custom console made or buy that one posted with cup holders IF it does not have the shifter hole pre-cut in the stock position

There are many stick cars of various brands you could harvest a console from that may fit. Junkyard find kind of thing.

Shifter location will also depend on the LS mounts used, not just the shifter relocation kit.

My 68 ragtop has an LS1 and a T56 out of a GTO (not the aftermarket Magnum). Looks like our shifters are located in the same place. My shifter is in the only location it will go (but the GTO T56 actually moved the shifter further back toward the rear of the car; had to get a small part out of an F body to put it where it is now).

I had an OEM console installed last year. Works great and no issues. Check out these pics. The last pic shows some differences of the T56. You can see the GTO design relative to others.

Shifter and stick are Hurst for an F body. I will say that my shifter location is more comfortable than the factory Camaro set up. I am 6' tall, long arms, inseam of 32" and I always had to lean forward off the seat to shift the car into 3rd gear (up and to the right) when it was a 4-speed. Now I sit comfortably and row the gears like I should. Each body type is different :)

Since i'll be getting a console, I'm planning to refresh the whole interior:

-New Seats (with seatbelts 3 point maybe, since my current airplane style gets me tickets from street cameras lol)

-new carpet kit (thinking of colors? maybe advice on taste?)

-headliner maybe?

Should i start a new thread for interior refresh? found old dead threads only.

The OEM console sits a few inches back than factory with the T56. No big deal for me. I was going for the "at first glance looks factory-look" but the 6-speed pattern gives it all away. That was the intention :)

With new seats (note mine) it is a little tight due to the meat of the console touching the thicker leg bolsters. You can see in my pics. Again, not an issue for me.

Here is one I build for my Chevelle. My goals were location for Power Window switches, Cup Holders and USB ports. View attachment 230353
Very clean and awesome set up, Vega$

What are you trying to achieve by installing a console?

Storage space
Arm Rest
Cup Holders
Console Gauges
????

Here is one I build for my Chevelle. My goals were location for Power Window switches, Cup Holders and USB ports.

It's installed between the seats and behind the shifter. Made from 16 gauge steel covered with vinyl to matched the seats and billet aluminum cup holders from Eddie Motorsports.

Goal
-cup holders so i can put my phone and house keys etc.. so they don’t keep disappearing under the seat each time lol

-a comfortable barrier between driver and passenger, currently if i have someone next to me and i take a fast turn, they end up on my lap haha

-at first i was going to get the simple small TMI cupholder console, but it doesn’t look as nice as the long console

With what you have this is the easiest option. And only $180

https://www.tmiproducts.com/chevy/c...s.com/chevy/camaro/1968-camaro/consoles/standard-center-console-1967-69-camaro/

With the full length by time you push it nack far enough to have cup holders and cut out for the shifter it will too far back to comfortably use the storage area and arm rest.

Plus it $800 plus $200 or more ship to Jeddah

For $1000 you can have a custom one made exactly like you want it to fit youe set up perfectly.

Fair point, I’ll also search locally here if i can find someone to custom make a console?

Console is usually wood? Or what material?

Thanks

Here's the first message i got back from TMI, where they mention that the "SPORT" does not come pre-cut. However, I think they meant the "SPORT XR", as you can see both photos down, the "SPORT" looks like it's pre-cut, unlike the XR.

I replied back to verify, but have not heard back from them yet.

Also found this 68 on Hemmings, it looks like it has the XR console, but the cupholders location are located up front. I'll give TMI a call today to find out

so i just found out that the TMI console vinyl does not come pre-cut, however the Fiberglass is PRE-cut. Thanks to MCB for confirming with TMI mgmt. Meaning i'll still have a problem fitting my shift lever.

Another option is to get a custom console from "Classic Truck Consoles", however they're fiberglass, no vinyl. I'm a little skeptic with keeping that material painted in black vs vinyl/leather.

Would you think it looks good? anyone here have them on a 68?

67-68-69 Camaro center console, Firebird, rally

thank you
