I believe it is body color inside the "cavity" under the cowl. I think the exception is if it has Z/28 stripes. Then the "cavity is somewhat sprayed the color of the stripe so when looking through the panel yousee the same color as the stripes. DO YOUR HOMEWORK ON THAT. I may be wrong. As far as firewall, the black came up close to the edge but does not have a fine line taped off.

Alright, thanks guys..!! This will have the rally stripes. So is the color in the cavity fully stripe color, or just directly under where the stripes are in a loosely somewhat "oversprayed" appearance??

The paint would be the entire top of the cowl except the corners by the door hinge area. You should not be able to see it through the fender/ cowl gap. It stopped at the edge where the firewall started. No hard tape line. They held a piece of hard foam against the firewall and just blew it in. vega$ had a good picture of his first orange 69 Z that showed it. He was doing engine work in the picture hopefully he will re post it. Here is what mine looked like. Mine is a 05-a Norwood car.

spray under the cowl vent grille as the stripe was painted off the car. See reply #2 here.

Note how the factory cleaned up the application on Pace Cars. Should've did that with Z/28 as well. I certainly don't have enough "purist" in me to duplicate a factory white stripe Z....

 

Makes it easy then on car with black stripes.

The cowl stripe color and area painted are applied different on California vs Norwood cars is my understanding. I have seen CA Z's with the entire top of the cowl painted the stripe color.

 

Not just California cars. My 08A Norwood Z (10 10 paint) had the top of the cowl painted white. I replicated it when i painted it in 2012.

Notice my wiper arm is still black. The wiper assy was installed after the white out.

 

My Z11 has the top painted hugger orange like the stripes. My understanding is that's the way the were all supposed to be done. Here's another thread out with discussion on the topic

Steve, is yours NOR or LOS built ? In the link that Al posted and I commented on, Kurt mentioned that the extra masking was done at the Norwood plant, but not Van Nuys.

 

I find it interesting how some processes varied from plant to plant and also seemed
to progress through the cars production cycle. The painters had a lot of freedom. Of
course it was people then and robots today.

Does anyone know the PPG color code for the black on the Rally Stripes, and bottom rocker..??
